Highly recommend for the veterinarian and for the horse breeder.

Excellent, practical book for the veterinarian who does equine reproductive work (whether occasional or regular), those want to get into equine reproductive work. Horse breeders can also benefit from this book as a number of the practices can be performed by them and it also an aid in understanding those that are performed by veterinarians. Highly recommend!

About the Author
Terry Stevenson has made Kenya his home since 1977 and is one of Africa's foremost bird-tour guides, having led numerous tours across the continent. He wrote "The Birds of Lake Baringo" while he was resident ornithologist there from 1981 to 1985, and is a member and advisor to the bird committee of Nature Kenya and to the East African Rarities Committee. John Fanshawe is the Africa consultant for BirdLife International. He has conducted research in the region for many years, and is widely regarded as unrivaled in his knowledge of East African birds and their conservation.

Best Field Guide to East Africa's Birds

Confronted by only one serious contender for the distinction of best field guide to the birds of East Africa, the Terry Stevenson/John Fanshawe entry wins by default. In featuring each descriptive summary and range map on a page facing the corresponding species illustration, the organization of the book qualifies it as a true field guide. While the field guide edition of "Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania" by Zimmerman, Turner, & Pearson incorporates several superior attributes, frequently including quality and variety of illustrations, it is essentially a condensation of a larger work and not organized in field-guide format. In covering a wider geographical area, the Stevenson/Fanshawe guide describes nearly 300 more species depicted on over twice as many color plates. Both of these fine books are potentially very useful for birding in Kenya and Tanzania, with the organization of the true field guide more likely to enhance its potential usefulness to those just beginning to appreciate the splendid avian diversity of East Africa.

Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa is superb!!

I think I have all the guides to the birds of East Africa in the last 30 years, but this most recent by Terry Stevenson and John Fanshawe is certainly the most comprehensive, artistically excellent and usable. Ber van Perlo's Collins Illustrated Checklist "Birds of Eastern Africa" is smaller and lighterweight but no comparison, nor intended to be, in description or plate detail. This new volume, with a 2002(!) publication date has amongst the best plates and abbreviated descriptions, in my opinion, ever published in a comparable volume on birds. Artists John Gale and Brian Small are fabulous (Norman Arlott lacks their skills, but does his subjects justice as well). It is a exceedingly worthwhile complement to Dale Zimmerman's larger format "Birds of Kenya and northern Tanzania" and includes all of Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi as well. Don't miss this book!

a must for the birder

everywhere you go in east africa you see birds. if you like them- you better be prepared for the trip! i got the guide a month before, and tried to get as familiar as possible with the birds before arriving to tanzania.

when we went on safari our guide pulled out his worn and faded zimmerman- the descriptions on one part, the illustrations on another and the distribution maps at the end. when i pulled my guide and gave him a try- he was very attached to his zimmerman but had to admit that the stevenson is indeed a worthy companion, with all the info about a species is on the same page...

compared to my european guide it is heavy and big- but the european contains only about 750 spp, while this one has more than 1200!

the illustrations are bright and clear.

i used it during my 30 day trip to tanzania and got more than 200 positive identifications, so i must go again to get the rest...

recommended!

There is no reason for this book

I need to get past my dislike for half books and just accept the fact that author’s think that they are necessary. Unfortunately, this is still a work in progress for me and when it comes to The Last Goodbye by JA Jance, I am still at a loss and scratching my head. What did this book prove? What did it add to the overall series? Very little as far as I am concerned.

The first 20% rehashes her last book and reintroduces characters, which if the reader has been following the series, already know.

The next 70% briefly touches on flying to Las Vegas, Ali and B’s wedding, Christmas and trying to track down the owner of a dog that Ali’s grandson has brought up to their hotel suite the day before the wedding is to take place.

I am not sure if others will be as bothered by where the title came from, but that is so not what I was expecting from a series that usually has a twist and a really bad guy.

Oh, and the last 10% are acknowledgements.

Other than knowing that Ali and B are married, there is no reason for this book.

"A Short But Good Story"

This is a short novella which moves right along with the wedding plans of Ali Reynolds and B. Simpson. They are in Las Vegas the day before their planned wedding at the Four Seasons Hotel. It's getting down to the wire, but B. takes Colleen and Colin, Ali's grandchildren, shopping while Ali rests comfortably in the soaking tub in their suite. It's 30 minutes before their dinner reservation when B. races in with the kids and the bellman who is loaded down with shopping bags. Also, wrapped in B.'s arms is a scared miniature longhaired dachshund that had been tossed out of a car onto the street, the car swiftly driven away. The kids are not about to turn the dog over to anyone, especially a dog pound. Arrangements have been made for a dog sitter while everyone attends the planned wedding rehearsal dinner. Ali has never had pets while growing up, and she just can't understand how she's going to cope with it on their honeymoon. She wants to find the owner for the little girl dog, so she and B. go to work gathering information while at the same time meeting all their obligations of the planned wedding for the next day. A short, sweet story which will bring a tear down your cheek. If you love dogs, you'll like this story.

About the Author

Joshua Goldman was born into the world of Sound Healing and has been working in the field his entire life. He is the son of Sound Healing Pioneer, Jonathan Goldman, and currently works with Goldman’s Healing Sounds as a facilitator at events such as the Healing Sounds Intensive. He also works as an Associate Director of the Sound Healers Association helping to organize events and spread knowledge through the sound healing community. He especially enjoys hosting toning groups and seeing people experience the direct effects of sound for the first time.

Alec Sims has been working with Jonathan Goldman’s Healing Sounds organization since 1998. His overtone chanting is featured on several of Jonathan’s award winning CD’s. He has facilitated the Healing Sounds Correspondence Course since 2003 and has garnered a depth of experience in practical sound work from conducting one on one sessions with hundreds of students. He is an Associate Director of the Sound Healers Association and has been a staff member of the international Healing Sounds Intensive since 1998.

Shining example.

Very interesting book. There are many practical exercises and instructions are clear. Writers encourages reader to explore world of sound in creative ways and devise his/her own techniques if needed. All basics of use of voice in "esoteric way" are here: basic toning, chakra sounds, chanting in magics (very fine new method), mantras...Forward is written by Jonathan Goldman, enough said.

Added 25.08.2015: No it's not enough, it seems that one person find it unhelpful also! So I will continue with descriptions of the chapters, one by one, also sorry for my possible English mistakes:

In forward, preface and introduction there are already fine definitions about sound therapy, This kind a therapy is describd as a type of "energy medicine". There is already one practical exercise in which one is aware of sounds around him/her. Sound is with us much more than we usually think. Also we meet authors, according to text they are very skillful in sound matters.
Chapters 1 and 2
Here we have more clear definiton of sound and how it react with energy and matter. Nice and clear picture of ear is given with explanations of terms and theory how we hear. Also resonance (how we influence each other through sound) in sound is explained. Ancient theory about overtones or harmonics is covered and why it is important in music (new pictures). After this chapters one will better understand why sound healing is important and possible. Hints how to use music (yes, any music from rock to new age) in therapy are also provided. Sound frequency, mysticism and primordial sound. Story of Benedictine monks...recommended reading. Authors invite us to the adventure of listening.
Chapter 3
Very good chapter indeed. Here one will learn basics about listening in sound alchemy and how to tranform negative sounds and noise into something more better. Very fine exercises.
Chapter 4
In this chapter first glimpses into actual vocal therapy are given, and authors start with brief view on shamanism, and how shamans use their voice and instruments in order to achieve higher state of mind. Next, different states of mind are explored (alpha, beta...) and definitions given. There is one interesting practical exercises when one using his/her own voice as kinda a drum, for more energy and for more relaxation. This chapter is very informative.
Chapter 5
This chapter is real practical introduction into sound healing (use of sound to provoke healing vibrations in recepient), proper breathing is explored and practical techniques are given. Breathing is actually already one form of sound therapy. Exercies are very smooth and interesting to do.
Chapter 6
Finally, finally in this chapter authors give first vocal toning exercises. This chapter presents basic information for whole book. All exercises from previous chapters are mixed in one very elegant method, and after sound "mmm" one can start to intoning sound in easy manner, we start with sound "ah" in relaxed way and authors tell us that after some practice maybe we will receive "songs ow power" like ancient shamans. Important chapter and after these methods the rest of the book is filled with infos about specific energies and how to awake them. But this chapter is a "must"! Basic of basic!

Sensible, Practical and Achievable

What impresses most about this book is the down-to-earth practical instructions for using sound in meditation and other healing practices. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the reader is guided progressively through a range of useful and interesting exercises which range from simple breathing exercises to creating sound sigils.

Some of the material in here will likely be familiar to many readers, but as it is designated a 'beginners' book, that is to be expected. But even those with some experience in using sound in esoteric practices, will likely find something new. For absolute beginners, the book works well as it begins with basic principles.

Too often new age books are written in a cloying manner which can be off-putting. These authors are grounded in science and in long established esoteric practices and traditions. Their writing is brisk, enlightening and sensible. The book does not require strange beliefs or philosophies, it is as pragmatic and informative as a book on electronics. Highly recommended.

Conscious Sound Riders

Music has a profound effect on me. It can make or break my day. Literally. So this book captivated my interest.
The book starts by describing what is sound from various points of views. From the point of view of a physician, physicist, psychiatrist to linguist, magickian, healer, shaman and vocalist. They all give different facets of what sound is.
The book bases its foundation on opening our awareness to sound, be in and conscious of sound, expanding our consciousness through sound and reaching far, riding the sound wave we choose to be carried on. Fascinating idea isn’t it?
The authors go further with saying that we are not passive recipients of sound, we can also alter the energy way of that sound by our awareness and that sound is an energetic nutrient.
Sonic Transmutation is also an interesting concept of changing unwanted noise to wanted noise with huge benefits on health especially if we live in highly noise polluted environments. A concept I am working on.
The authors work a lot with breathing exercises which is the basis of all the exercises which will then be extensively illustrated in the book. Meditation through breathing, humming, toning and mantras reciting are all beautiful exercises to get in touch with the sound energy and slowly be enwrapped by its healing properties.
There is a lot of background of what is shamanism and how shamans have used sound to travel in between the worlds. There is also a detailed description of Brain Wave Rhythms and their effect on our brains.
I have experimented some of the exercises whilst reading the book and some of them had profound effect on me. They are not exercises that can be mastered in a couple of session.

This book is more of a textbook for exercising consciously with sound every day, becoming a conscious sound rider until slowly we can learn to shift both the sounds we hear and those we make in a transformative healing energy.

Sarah Lynn’s three young sons taught her how to race toy cars. Simple book, easy to read

This is a great book if your little one is learning to read. They also get to count as they go through the 10 laps. It is ideal for those kids who might like cars, especially if they like cars and racing. Over all it is a cute book to read with your little one.

Short on counting, and its ending leaves core demographic a little down

I don't think they should have subtitled this "A Counting Book", yes they go 10 laps but only say the number once. They don't repeat the numbers, there's nothing in particular to count and it doesn't even keep the counting laps theme at the end. But that being said it is a cute picture book that's sure to please young race fans. The illustrations are cute and the verse is catchy enough especially with the "Va-Va-Vroom!" being re-enforced to great effect on each page. I have a 3 year old son, who is a car/truck nut, and a 5 year old daughter whose currently into girlier past times. So, when I started out my son was all about it and pointing out the colors of the car, but since there was a pink girl racer my daughter also into it. And as it turns out **spoiler alert** the girl wins the race. This delighted my daughter, but the book wasn't for her, nor has interested her enough to read it again. My son has asked to read it a few more times, but I can't but think that he would have been more delighted if the protagonist on the cover with the bear had won. I'm not trying to be chauvinistic, I think it's great that girls can race and win and I gladly buy my daughter books with strong female leads, but this book didn't really feature her until unexpectedly at the end.

In the end, I would have given this book 5 stars had it removed the subtitle and had featured all three racers on the cover, because it is a cute book and I like the idea of the girl winning, but instead the book cover indicates that this book is a counting book (it's not really) and that the boy with the bear is the central character (he's not).

I put this on my kindle fire for my grandson, age 2 and he will attend throughout and asks to repeat it. He is quite a busy boy and will not sit still for a book unless it interests him. I am glad I purchased this selection. Helps when stuck in traffic, at doctor's office, etc.

About the Author

Gabriel Garc�a M�rquez was born in 1927 in the town of Aracataca, Columbia.Latin America's preeminent man of letters, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982. Garc�a M�rquez began his writing career as a journalist and is the author of numerous other works of fiction and nonfiction, including the novels The Autumn of the Patriarch and Love in the Time of Cholera, and the autobiography Living to Tell the Tale. There has been resounding acclaim for his life's work since he passed away in April 2014.

Incredible, as always!

Gabo is something else. He is, to put it simply, an astounding writer, with a verve of language and a capacity for fleshing out great characters and fantastic stories unparalleled by any living writer. I daresay he is the best living writer, at least of those who are famous, and I doubt many who read him would disagree that he is at least among the best.

This collection of stories draws upon several other volumes, and spans a fair portion of his very long career (may he live a thousand more years!). If you have read any Garcia Marquez, you will love these little gems as much as you loved his novels-- I enjoyed "Innocent Erendira", "The Very Old Man" and "The Handsomest Drowned Sailor" best of those I recall; sadly, my copy was lost so I don't have a reference at hand.

If you have not read any Garcia Marquez: first, I recommend you do so IMMEDIATELY... there is a reason he is quite famous and a reason he is so renowned; both are very just. This volume is a nice starting point, a gateway drug into the wonderful world of Gabo. Work backwards: the early tales are good, but do not exemplify Garcia Marquez at his fullest strength, and to really appreciate him in the beginning you should really read him at his fullest capacity.

You will almost assuredly devour this little volume and end up begging for more. I recommend, of course, ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE (his masterpiece, and worth reading no matter what you think of his other works!!!), LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA, his COLLECTED NOVELLAS, and his more recent STRANGE PILGRIMS, which is another excellent collection of short stories.

But what are you doing reading my review? Get this book and any other Garcia Marquez you can get your hands on, and read, read, read!

Highly Recommend This Short Story Collection: Good Reading.

You might not like or understand every story, but this is a good read.

Gabriel Jos� de la Concordia Garc�a M�rquez(1927 - ), or simply Gabo as he was known, was born in Columbia. He started as a journalist, then he became an editor, and a publisher. He won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Garc�a M�rquez has lived mostly in Mexico and Europe and currently lives in Mexico City. The 80 years old author is credited with introducing or popularizing magical realism in modern literary fiction.

Some of his works have been classified as both fiction and non-fiction: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (Cr�nica de una muerte anunciada) (1981), tells the tale of a revenge killing, and Love in the Time of Cholera (El amor en los tiempos del c�lera) (1985), is loosely based on the story of his parents' courtship. Many of his works, including those two, take place in the "Garc�a M�rquez universe." The settings and characters are continued from one book to the next. The stories and novels cross genres and include magical realism: flying people, flying objects, the dead who can still think, etc. He has eight novels and numerous shorter works.

His novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien a�os de soledad) (1967), has sold more than 36 million copies worldwide.

Based on his writings, it strikes the general that since he has written many short stories and only 8 novels, then it would be interesting to read some of his short stories. At the present time there are three books on the English market, although more have been printed. Five have been printed in the last 30 years, and three are still popular: the present book, The Collected Novellas, and Leaf Storm: and other Stories. Leaf storm has seven stories. The Collected Novellas has Leaf Storm plus two others: No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

The present book has the widest selection since it has 26 stories, long and short, that cover both realism and magical realism. Also, some are aimed at children. I enjoyed the collection and put it in the same class as Joyce's Dubliners, or similar in terms of enjoyment.

My only slight criticism is that his children's stories seem very adult. Some will be surprised with the realism and the lack of magic in many stories.

Joel R. Helms is an Associate Professor in Mathematics at the University of Cincinnati - Blue Ash. Previous to 2004, Mr. Helms taught at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton Virginia. Mr. Helms has taught college level mathematics since 1994.

It's been a couple of years since I've read this, but I still think of the twins at least a couple of times a week. This is 100% the craziest (true) story you will ever read.
I would suggest buying a few copies because you will probably give yours away to someone because you NEED to have someone else read it so you can talk about how insane everything is.

Amazing book, awful photograph quality

The one reason I did not rate four stars is because the pictures in the book are difficult- some are impossible to see. It may be the paper or the quality; many of the pictures are too dark thus making it impossible to really get a feel of who these twins were, and their environment.
Otherwise, the book is impeccably researched by the author and well-written. I won't go into the details of what the book is about - too many reviews do this already - but then, it is hard to explain. It is not just about these two amazing women, but about family values and dynamics, sisterhood, mental health, the legal system, the dynamics of small towns, and bullying ...
I found the twins to be incredibly creative and it's a shame their work was not recognized by anyone else except the author. Wallace digs deep, and then deeper, into their story without pity or remorse, with respect for all involved. She is a TRUE journalist and gifted author.

Grew up hearing about the silent twins because of their Barbadian roots. Fascinating that their relationship & a study of it has no doubt shifted the paradigm of the then existing body of research about Twins' interactions & the expected patterns of their lives.
