Richard Clarke is a man born with the unnatural ability to control all reality around himself. Whether it be granting himself immortality, stopping bullets in mid-air, or destroying his enemies with a mere thought, he is often feared as a god on Earth. However, outliving everyone he ever loved whilst losing friends to the limitations of his powers causes a heavy burden upon his shoulders, and in the 21st Century, Clarke is a stoic loner, traveling and living only to kill evil. He has no time for friends or family, but all that changes when he meets a dedicated doctor working in the dark streets of Detroit.

In Detroit, Clarke vows to eliminate all gangs terrorizing the city's populace. However, after delivering a junkie with a broken leg to a hospital, Clarke is given a chance to end his decades of rampages, killing criminals and villains. Instead, he is offered a chance to work in the hospital along the idealistic Doctor Chloe Hall. His powers give him an incredible edge in the emergency room and he soon realizes that he could save everyone who comes through the hospital doors. But the gangs are still out there, and Clarke has to make a choice. Should he keep killing, or should he begin saving lives?

"That which is destroyed cannot be repaired. That which is mended cannot be maintained."

The price of being a super hero
By Solfatari
This book is a short entertaining read, worth your buck. Micro God helps to add emotional context to what it's really like to be a super hero. The protagonist, fearless to the point of apathy, is a character who's past is fascinatingly blurry with a future much the same. I look forward to seeing future work from this author.

Phenomenal (warning: spoilers)
By Elizabeth
Absolutely brilliant. You did an amazing job creating a plot that wasn't over done, yet had an extreme amount of possibilities to work with. I really enjoyed reading something so original that avoids so many clichs. The science of how Clarke cannot create food was very interesting as well, and it reminded me of Jurassic park (in the sense of made up science sounding legitimate).
You did an amazing job creating likable characters, and balancing out some bad traits with redeemable qualities. Richard especially, considering times where he switches from being a bored, grumpy man to being amusing or happy. It also made me feel a strange sense of satisfaction when he killed Freddie G, because he mentions a few times about how death and murder don't entertain or bother him much anymore, yet when Chloe dies, he feels grief and intense sadness. However, he also feels the need for revenge and finds a sort of joy when he gets his revenge.
The setting I found very immersive, even though it didn't travel very far. I don't quite realize the small number of settings in the book until the end. You did an amazing job on giving the environments depth and description, even with little things like the dirty chairs in the beginning.

Me being a young writer, found a lot of joy and inspiration in your story. I hope to see more work from you, and you can bet I'll buy it!

Diamond in the Ruff
By Anthony Giancola
I won't lie. I bought this book due to the shameless plugging done by the author on his YouTube channel Krimson Rogue (which by the way, if you've ever wanted to watch comparisons between beloved books and hated adaptations). I was pleasantly surprised though. I have been a long time supporter of self published authors and, while I can say I don't like all the self published books I read (because honestly anyone can write some words and self publish now a days) I can say I occasionally stumble into one that should be published. This is one of those.

Author K.R. Martin wrote a fascinating character and faces the reality of having all the powers you always pretended you had as a kid. The hero is remarkably interesting to read about and makes the book fly past faster than it already goes.

I don't want to give much away as the book isn't long and it's hard to say something spoiler free. What I can say is. The characters are great, the story is great, and the writing style is great. The whole thing is just...great. I can say wholeheartedly that I will be on the look out for more by Mr. Martin.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of silver screen legend Douglas ( The Ragman's Son ) are bound to enjoy his credible fiction debut, a sometimes spellbinding, solidly commercial tale of Hollywood producer Danny Dennison, who as a boy is the only one of his family to survive a Nazi concentration camp. The orphaned youngster locks the secret of this Jewish birthright deep within him, where it festers for decades, distancing him from those he loves. By age 55, Danny has lost interest in the moneymaking films he churns out, and has reaped a bitter harvest from the dissolution of his joyless marriage to a wealthy alcoholic whose powerful father intends to destroy Danny's career. Enter young, sensual Luba, the quintessential whore with a heart of gold--which she naturally saves for Danny despite his inexplicable surges of anger and cold withdrawal. Luba reawakens all Danny's desires, including a hunger to redeem himself as an artist and a Jew. Douglas acquits himself well when liming the complicated mix of love and need that binds Luba and her mother Magda, but relies on cliches to put flesh on most other characters, including Danny himself and his crass agent and buddy Milt. Nonetheless, this is highly readable, entertaining drama. Literary Guild dual selection.

From Library Journal
Readers of Douglas's autobiography, The Ragman's Son (LJ 10/15/88), will speculate on the parallels in his first novel, which also chronicles the rise to fame of a Russian-Jewish emigre in Hollywood moviedom. The first half of the book alternates chapters about Moishe, who becomes director Danny Dennison, with the story of Luba, a Polish refugee who uses sex as a survival tool. She is a London prostitute when she first encounters the successful but unhappy protagonist, and he is at once captivated by her honest charm and the stories she tells about her hardknocks past. Luba makes Danny realize that he has prostituted his talent and denied a long-suppressed secret. This awkward attempt at fiction is devoid of both style and substance, but public libraries should anticipate high demand from the legion of Douglas's fans. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/90.

Superbly written!. Kirk D is confirmed to be not only a great Hollywood actor but also a great novelist as well. It is said in his other book, The Gift that Danny's letter (care of Luba) to Patricia is found in this book but I can't find it here. Where is it?

Due Diligence: An Impertinent Inquiry into Microfinance, by David Roodman

The idea that small loans can help poor families build businesses and exit poverty has blossomed into a global movement. The concept has captured the public imagination, drawn in billions of dollars, reached millions of customers, and garnered a Nobel Prize. Radical in its suggestion that the poor are creditworthy and conservative in its insistence on individual accountability, the idea has expanded beyond credit into savings, insurance, and money transfers, earning the name microfinance. But is it the boon so many think it is?

Readers of David Roodman's openbook blog will immediately recognize his thorough, straightforward, and trenchant analysis. Due Diligence, written entirely in public with input from readers, probes the truth about microfinance to guide governments, foundations, investors, and private citizens who support financial services for poor people. In particular, it explains the need to deemphasize microcredit in favor of other financial services for the poor.

An outstanding investigation of the realities behind microfinance
By John Gibbs
It is impertinent to question the effectiveness of charitable efforts, and this makes it difficult for anyone to raise doubts about the practice of microcredit, which involves lending small sums of money to the poor at high interest rates. But if the purpose of the charitable efforts is to help the poor, rather than to gratify the donors, then someone really does need to investigate whether the practice actually works. That person is David Roodman in this book.

The quick - and for most donors very disappointing - answer is that there is no convincing evidence that microcredit is an effective tool for bringing people out of poverty. There are many stories of people who have indeed worked their way out of poverty after accessing microcredit loans, but there are also many stories of people who have worked their way further into debt. According to the author, the most reliable research into the effectiveness of microcredit does not indicate any net positive effect on the incidence of poverty. Microfinance as a whole, however, particularly microsavings accounts, does provide a very useful means for the poor to manage their money.

Intuitively these findings make sense. In Western countries, poor people who save money tend to improve their lot, whereas poor people who max out their credit cards tend to stay poor. Poor people tend to borrow money more often to meet today's needs than to invest in high-return business enterprises. Finding food for today is a more pressing concern than repaying a loan tomorrow.

The surprising thing about the findings is that they tend to contradict the virtually unanimous voice of microcredit proponents over many years. Presumably the microcredit myth has lasted so long because it appeals to our paternalistic instincts as donors, romantically portraying the poorest of the poor as skilled entrepreneurs just needing access to capital (when what they really need is opportunities for decent employment), portraying women as better managers of money than men (when in reality they are perhaps more susceptible to coercive demands for repayment), and suggesting that poverty can be solved through a simple commercial transaction (when much more complex structural change is required).

The author does not confine himself to investigating the effect of microfinance on financial poverty. He also considers the impact on freedom and industry building. He presents his observations in a measured and impartial but very engaging and readable manner. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is concerned about serving the poor effectively.

One of the most comprehensive books on issues of microfinance
By Oliver Schmidt
David Roodman writes extremely well and that makes it an engaging read to start with. He is a very well trained academician who has taken more tie and effort than any other I know to understand what microfinance actually does (with the possible exception of Esther Duflo). He interacted with many users of microfinance and, supposedly more intensively, the providers - managers, investors, development agencies, etc. - and genuinely reflects their experiences and the kind of knowledge they have gathered. He blends and contrasts and syntesis it with the principles and insights of academic methods, particularly in the area of impact-assessment. The result is an outstandingly rich book that offers learning ground for academicians and practitioners equally. A truly due diligence, written to be read!

Praise for the book
By David Roodman
Below are the endorsements the book has received. As the author, I didn't want to rate the book, but Amazon required me to.

Roodman has been the most consistent and articulate analyst of microcredit in recent years. I hope this book reaches a wide readership and brings lasting, universal improvements in financial services for low-income people. --Muhammad Yunus, founder, Grameen Bank, and winner, Nobel Peace Prize

At a time when the pendulum of public opinion on microfinance is swinging from exuberance to cynicism, Roodman's balanced, evidence-based assessment is a timely and seminal contribution. This is an essential read for practitioners, promoters, and critics of microfinance. --Sir Fazle Abed, founder and chair, BRAC

Due Diligence is the result of years of rigorous, fact-based analysis and deep thinking of the type microfinance sorely needs. Anyone interested in the future of financial inclusion should read Roodman's work. --Carlos Danel Cendoya, cofounder,Compartamos Banco

Due Diligence is the microfinance book that grown-ups have been waiting for, as complex and fascinating as its subject. Roodman brushes away the slogans and the oversimplified dogmas to uncover microfinance's long history and multifarious present. It's required reading for anybody who seeks to engage seriously with the questions of whether and how microfinance works. And best of all, it's a pleasure to read. --Felix Salmon, Reuters

Microfinance has more than its fair share of myths, both positive and negative. It's a field in desperate need of cool, rational, and evidence-based analysis, and David Roodman has proved that he is singularly capable of providing it. --Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist and Adapt

No other book on microfinance is at once so well-informed and so objective. Roodman has an insider's depth of understanding, while his position outside the field allows him to look with clear--and penetrating--eyes. --Elisabeth Rhyne, Managing Director, Center for Financial Inclusion

Roodman pulls off the feat of examining microfinance from many angles without losing focus. The result is the most thoughtful book about the industry yet published--and consequently one of the most thought-provoking. --Stuart Rutherford, author of The Poor and Their Money

This is a splendid book. It's original and very smart. It's an engaging read. Best of all, it displays a high order of intellectual honesty. None of this is any surprise to those of us who have followed Roodman's microfinance blog, which is the only one I never delete before reading. --Richard Rosenberg, CGAP

David Roodman does the kind of analysis the research world needs more of: bringing together quantitative studies, qualitative studies, and historical context into a rich, holistic, hype-free picture. It's not just the most thorough and balanced assessment of microfinance we've seen--it's a case study in how to do thorough and balanced assessment. --Holden Karnofsky and Elie Hassenfeld, founders, GiveWell

Roodman's book astonished me. It is well researched, very well written, and perceptive. It could aid the microfinance industry in a shift from helping poor people cope with poverty to helping them move out of poverty. --Deepa Narayan, Director of the World Bank's Voices of the Poorand Moving Out of Poverty series and former Senior Adviser on Poverty Reduction

Microcredit perhaps never deserved the uncritical kudos it received between 1997 and 2006. Nor does it deserve the vilification since. David Roodman's is an important voice in looking at the field without prejudice. He comes up with several insights which will be useful for re-jigging the field. --Vijay Mahajan, Chairman, BASIX and chair of executive committee, CGAP

Due Diligence is a balanced, respectful, diagnostic effort to make microfinance a more powerful tool for social progress. For microfinance activists Roodman has written a page turner. Obligatory reading if you want to call yourself a microfinance leader. --Jonathan Lewis, founder and chair, MicroCredit Enterprises

This incredibly thorough and supremely careful public examination of microfinance is already part of the canon in the field. I don't think anyone who hasn't read Due Diligence can legitimately claim a serious interest in microfinance. --Timothy Ogden, cofounder and editor-in-chief, Philanthropy Action

Getting Back to the Personal
By FicktionPhotography
This is definitely a nice, new approach to a textbook for learning history. Instead of writing down facts and dates and impersonal stories of conquest and death, Roderick Nash and Gregory Graves have set out to accomplish a new style of history told through biography. Each chapter is immensely researched and carefully selected to show a period of the United States's past.

In the first volume, the one in question, it is not a surprise that the chapters are dominated by white males. However, the authors are kind enough to include Abigail Adams, Tecumsuh, and Frederick Douglass to the line-up to engage readers in the subordination of all three groups: women, Native Americans, and African Americans, respectively.

It is also not a general surprise that many of the chapters overlap their history dates as there were many people acting at the same time in influential ways across the beginning years of the United States. It's often hard, at least for me, to keep the dates in an orderly fashion due to the way it is written and the ovrelap, but the authors are skilled enough to remind you appropriately of when an overlap is occurring.

This is such a well-written text that it could be read from cover-to-cover or it can be read piecemeal depending on who you are interested in. Due to the biographical nature, it helps make the stories more memorable and we also get the background before birth of the important person in question and then their death. It's often unknown to us how, say, Christopher Columbus died or his other exploits across the ocean due to the fact that history textbooks usually just mention his major accomplishments and move on. This text encompasses the person and their relationships, their actions, and their faults in order to exemplify the American or non-American individuals that stood out from the rest and shaped a nation.

traditional approach
By W Boudville
The idea implemented here is an old one. Dating back centuries. Where earlier books might have been biographies of famous people. To inspire youngsters to such heights. In reflection of our more enlightened times, the authors give biographies of a diverse set of Americans. The traditional ones are here. Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. But so too are Frederick Douglass and Christopher Columbus. Technically, Columbus was not an American. The word is an anachronism in his case.

The inclusion of Douglass and Lee in the same volume makes for interesting comparisons. Their careers and causes were point and counterpoint.

The chapters are quick reads. The questions deliberately try to raise the reader's interest and involvement in understanding the subjects' lives and their times.

detailed and enjoyable
By J. Locke
I found this book to be very informative and well organized. I think it's important to have collective understandings of the "stories" of American influences who helped shape America itself.
I might also be a bit bias given that Graves is my professor and I have an enormous crush on him. I adore this Okie's lectures. Just like his lectures, these collective stories are informative and very interesting. Captivating at best. Go Sooners!

Perceive - the perfect next step in the Katon University Series
By Kat's Inspiration Corner
This book is the 2nd in the Katon University Series and is the perfect next step. Andrea is continuing to make readers want more while deepening the story line. I really did not want to put this book down, and finished it in less than a day. Yes I thought this was a wonderful book! Just in case you weren't sure. Andrea's writing has gotten stronger with this series. Although it is a YA book, it is perfect for anyone who believes that it is possible to have magic living among us.
If you haven't read book 1, get that one first to get the full effect. There are obviously things that start in book 1 that are fleshed out in book 2 that you might miss if you just start with book 2.

The love story between Nicole and Austin continue to blossom in this book as well as Nicole's powers. Or I should say, as Nicole learns how to draw out her powers and use them as they were meant to be used.

There is a little more "darkness" in this book than in the first but I believe it is fine for the YA reader as there isn't detailed evil or horrors, blood or gore. This "darkness" is part of how Nicole learns more of her powers, how she can use them and grow. But Nicole is part of the light so the darkness does not over take her or those she loves.

I can't wait to get book 3, Observe, that is coming out in a few weeks. I want to see what else Nicole and Austin find as Nicole learns more of her blossoming powers; her "interesting" family members, both alive and "semi" alive; as well as what trials she will be put through as she learns more of the Aretes and Tarians and just what they need her for.

I did receive my copy of Perceive as a gift, but had to share my thoughts as soon as I had finished.

A Goosebump Raising Adventure
By M.R. Buttars
Totally creepy! I love the way the magic causes so many problems for our characters. Also, Nicole's character continues to grow as her ability to channel increases and the truth about who she is comes out in the open. A ghostly woman claims Nicole is destined to save the Aretes, but her own parents want to destroy her kind. When the toll to gain the means to end something her ancestor created and right a horrible wrong becomes to high, she wonders who she should trust.

This book kept me guessing until the end. And beyond. Even though Nicole gains what she's after, she has to wonder what path it has sent her on. I still don't know who is telling the truth and what other craziness could happen. The spores and giant tentacle in the brain were so intense. It was also great to see some elements from the novellas in the series to come back into play to aid Nicole. Also, she and Austen make an awesome couple, but I feel things worked out for them too easily. I wonder what will happen next to test their relationship. If you don't mind having some pretty bizarre dreams and some spine tingling adventure, you'll like this book.

The Story Continues with Nicole and Austin
By Christine Meads
Nicole and Austin continue in the 3rd book of the Katon University series. Nicole continues to work on her channeling and travels to Moses Lake, WA to work with a elderly gentleman, Albert. The spiders follow her and she sees the old woman again. There is something the woman wants her to do and Nicole believes her. While at Moses Lake, Nicole finds out about a meteor that was there and then disappeared. Her power has something to do with that meteor. And the family that lives nearby is getting sicker by the day

Will Nicole complete what the old woman wants her to do? Will Nicole learn the secrets that her parents and the old woman hide?

Both Andrea and Austin continue to grow in this story and so do their feeling for each other. Andrea Pearson has woven a wonderful but frightening story about two young people who really don't know what life has in store for them. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I have gotten the series from the author through Amazon and her own website

A useful reference for scholars
By Dennis Petticoffer
In this welcome, rational appraisal, the author sheds light upon influences, goals and themes of Cummings' verse by explicating in detail 25 of the poet's finest works (many of which have never been closely examined). Lane objectively assesses Cummings' strengths and weaknesses. Though an overview of Cummings' work and philsophy emerges, a complete reading of the book is attained only through great concentration due to its stiff organization (one explication after another--25 times). The book's primary value, therefore, would seem to lie in its use as a reference tool for the close examination of a few particular poems. Although scholars should be rewarded by Lane's insight, general readers (even those with a genuine interest in Cummings) may not have the patience to wait for enlightenment to intensify their intrigue.

Lopez Jr. explores the origins of this 2,500-year-old religion and traces its major developments up to the present, focusing not only on the essential elemenmts common to all schools of Buddhism but also revealing the differences among the major traditions. Amazon.com Review
Much of what we hear about Buddhism today in the West focuses on its philosophy, and how it can change one's life. Throughout history, however, Buddhism's mythology, scriptures, heroes, and its promise for salvation from rebirth have been the Buddhist teachings that most people have known. Religion professor Donald Lopez has mastered a good deal of this immense lore and managed with The Story of Buddhism to get it into a manageable package. Rather than providing a chronological history or country-by-country breakdown, Lopez explores general topics, meandering through two-and-a-half millennia, from India to Japan. In sections such as "Monastic Life," "Tantra," and "Pilgrimage," he talks about the origins of each topic and its mainstream manifestations. In addition, he spices up his work with delectable, if occasionally bizarre, examples from specific cultures. There is, for instance, the story of the depraved man who, once having said the words "Lotus Sutra," was saved from Hell. And the tale of the practice called the "act of truth," in which a perfectly candid statement can have magical powers. Or the story of the monk who attempted to rescue some maggots by opening his own flesh for them. No doubt, Buddhism is interesting, but it takes a competent scholar and a good storyteller to get it just right. Lopez fills the bill. --Brian Bruya

From Publishers Weekly
Lopez, a professor of Buddhist studies at the University of Michigan, says that his primary aim for this book is "to focus on Buddhist practice as a religion." Unlike more superficial how-to books on Buddhism, this book gives a thorough historical and theological explanation of Buddhism's major tenets, starting with Buddhist cosmology and then moving to chapters dedicated to the Three Jewels of Buddhism (the Buddha, dharma and sangha) before ending with a chapter on enlightenment. Interspersed are anecdotes intended to teach key principles in keeping with the idea of Buddhism-as-story; unfortunately, these vignettes are a bit overpowered by lengthy discourse on the history and interpretations of those principles. The bulk of the chapter on "lay practice," for example, focuses on various countries' traditions of lay ordination and funeral rituals, as well as monasteries' relations with their respective states, rather than explicating actual daily lay practice. In trying to explain not only Buddhism's key teachings but also their variations by country, region, teacher and school, the text loses focus. Lopez provides a list for further reading at the end of each chapter as well as a bibliography and glossary at the end of the book, which should be helpful for the student of world religions. His command of the subject is obvious, but his prose is sometimes dry, and the scope may be overly ambitious for the general reader.

Some good information, but poorly organized
By William H. Coffin
Lopez includes a lot of valuable information in this work. Probably more information than a beginner needs or wants. Also, I found the organization to be confusing. A much better book in this category, I felt, was Karen Armstrong's "Buddha". I also recommend "The Buddhist Handbook" by Snelling, although it is more idiosyncratic than the others.

Concise (too) overview of Buddhism
By miles@riverside
Most bookstore books on Buddhism seem to be of the inspirational -- "how to make your personal problems better through Buddhism" -- sort. I've been looking for a Religious Studies type book on Buddhism. I've read a couple D.T. Suzuki books like that on Zen Buddhism, but THE STORY OF BUDDHISM here is the first single critical/historical text I've found on the subject of The Whole Buddhist Thing.
I agree with the earlier review titled "Not The Best Introduction" that the text glosses over a lot of issues that could really benefit from more explanation. The author blazes through the 5 Aggregates of Attachment and the 4 Noble Truths in about as many pages. Zen gets a whole 7 pages. There's actually more stuff in my encyclopedia on Nagarjuna, the Void school, and the Yogacara school than I could find here.
I suppose that's what happens when you try to compress such a vast subject into a 250 page discussion. For me, the book was a memory-refresher on the few subjects I already knew something about, but not a good explanation of unfamiliar material. There's a helpful glossary at the end of the book, however.

A Scholar's Introduction to Buddhism
By Robin Friedman
Donald Lopez, a professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan, is one of the best scholars who attempt to present a balanced, accurate picture of Buddhism as it has been practiced over the generations. His book "The Story of Buddhism" considers the actual practice of Buddhism, in all its diverse forms, in Asia, superstitions, magic, idiosyncracies, and all. In this way, it differs from most books that present Buddhism to Americans. These books typically focus on meditation, on the liberating, non-theistic character of the Buddha's teaching, and of Buddhism as a guide to life in the difficulties of secular 20th and 21st century America. Such works are valuable and important, but they fail to give the reader a historical sense of Buddhism.
Lopez's book opens with a short treatment of Buddhist cosmology, including its picture of the universe, the earth, and the heavens and hells. There is an all-to-brief discussion of the key Buddhist teaching of Dependent Origination.
The chapter on cosmology is followed by a discussion of the life of the Buddha, taken from a wide variety of textual sources, of the Dharma, Monasticism, Lay Life, and Enlightenment.
The focus of the book is on the various schools of Mahayana Buddhism and on the Buddhism of Tibet. I found surprisingly little discussion of Theravada Buddhism, (practiced historically in Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand) which is likely the earliest version of Buddhism we have today. Lopez describes well how various Mahayana thinkers broke away from earlier teachings but doesn't tell us much about these early teachings themselves.
There is a great deal of emphasis in the book on how the Buddha's teaching was applied and modified over the years. Most of lay practice, Lopez informs us, was devoted to the accumulation of merit by the practice of good deeds. A regular meditation practice, much less textual study of the Sutras, was simply unavailable to most people who have over the generations called themselves Buddhists, either laity or monastic.
Lopez describes well the ritualistic practices of any number of Buddhist schools, emphasisizing matters such as relic worship, ancestor worship, fortune-telling and horoscopes, miracle cures, magic, mandalas, and what the modern reader is likely to view as superstition. He briefly describes for the reader a number of Buddhist schools and practices, including Tantric Buddhism, the Pure Land School, and Zen, and their different paths to enlightenment. There is a wonderfully detailed picture of a ritual involving the Heart Sutra, repeated many times, with the use of icons and statues.
This book is a welcome, clear-minded corrective to those who approach Buddhism ahistorically. But there is, indeed, more to the story than this, as Professor Lopez realizes. For all his objectivity, I think Lopez has some grasp of the power of the Buddha's message which has led many to it, including modern Americans, over the millenia. This is most clearly indicated in the final paragraph of Professor Lopez's book. He writes (p. 256)
" But there is also another challenge, the challenge provided by the dharma, which makes the remarkable claim that it is possible to live a life untainted by what are called the eight worldly concerns: gain and loss, fame and disgrace, praise and blame, happiness and sorrow."
This is a worthwhile critical introduction to an endlessly fascinating teaching.
