This was a textbook for one of my culinary classes. It is easy,to read and filled with a lot of information. We made several of the recipes and each were easy to follow and tasted good. I would recommend this book to others. Great information about nutrients and I use this as a reference. Written in a way most ages can understand. I think this would be a good tool for homeschooling middle to high school ages.

This book is appropriate if you're designing your own operating system, but you should look elsewhere for more concrete file system information.

The beginning of the guide covers file organization and compares and contrasts sequential, direct, and indexed sequential approaches. Author Alan Tharp highlights each system's means of storing, locating, and checking information. Then the author moves on to describe data at the bit level--the actual ones and zeroes that are encoded on a piece of media to represent data. Tharp also discusses superimposed coding, a sort of efficiency routine that conserves disk space.

Tharp features a multitude of information about trees, exploring binary trees, b-trees, hashing, tree hashing, and PATRICIA trees for the benefit of his readers. Then he gets into sorting at the file-system level, explaining all the usual sorts, plus algorithms that are unique to persistent storage media. Must have and place near Knuth on the bookshelf

It's ~old book (1988), but it still very actual now, and will be actual in future. This book contain only principles and algorithms, but it all showed so deep and clear, so I was very impressed then read it first time. B-tree type structures description is best I ever seen. (Need to have this book if You perform serious low-level work on NTFS, BFS or other File System, based on B-trees.). And even if You not work with such File Systems - this book is classic algorithm book and I put it on my bookshelf near Knuth's volumes.

This book is one of the few gems in computer science. It is written intelligently. One can read it fluently. It is about a reasonably important subject. The book is well crafted (hardcover, layout...). In short reading it makes you happy and smart.
The only disadvantage of it: there is no sample code. Desperate people might want to check on Folk, Zeollick, Riccardi "File Structures".

This book is the text book of my cs education of file organization. And i can comfortably say that it gives much insight not just on file organization but also on algorithms. I haven't read all the chapters but among the chapters i read, without any exaggeration i can say that i've learnt every word of what the author wants teach.

Nor did it begin with Sherman's march to the sea. Instead, it dates to the beginning of recorded history itself. "All the characteristics of modern war--the blurring of the line between battlefield and society, the engulfing of women and children in the violence of war, the destruction of society's infrastructure, the uprooting of entire populations--were anticipated in ancient siege warfare," writes author Paul Bentley Kern. This fascinating book begins by describing the theory of siege warfare and its engineering, but focuses mainly on its historical practice from biblical times through the Roman period. Kern shows that besieging fortifications was mainly a technical problem that put warriors on the sidelines. When the problem was solved, however, "the assaulting troops found themselves not on a conventional field of battle opposed by an army but in a maze of streets and buildings opposed by an entire population," writes Kern. "Often they were under orders to sack the city, one of the few circumstances in which military commanders countenanced indiscriminate violence." Kern does not shy away from this uncomfortable fact, and actually focuses on the special plight of women and children: "Their presence threatened the notion of war as a contest between warriors, undermined the conventional standards of honor and prowess that governed ancient warfare, and paradoxically made war less restrained by creating a morally chaotic cityscape in which not only the walls collapsed but deeply rooted social and moral distinctions as well." A Good Overview of Siege Warfare

So little has been written about ancient siege techniques that I was immediately intrigued when I first saw this book. After reading it I must profess that I enjoyed it immensely. It is at times plodding and repetitive, however it does an excellent job of emphasizing the importance of siege warfare in the ancient world. I find that I now have a much deeper appreciation of what was required to take or protect a city in ancient days.
This book provides a good overview of the developments of siege tactics throughout ancient history. Most of the subject matter deals with empires or peoples near the Mediterranean. The author does a good job of organizing the available sources to back up his discussions of different cultures, sieges, etc. At times he does attempt to expand on the sources and usually his opinions are logical interpretations. An added bonus is his bibliography which is an excellent source of references for continued research if desired.
All in all I found this book to be very interesting. It handles a lot of subject matter in detail that is usually passed over or severely summarized by military historians. Even a seasoned military historian will find that he has learned something from this book. It brings a surprising level of humanity to ancient warfare. However, one thing I do wish the book had was a chapter that went in depth into the design and manufacture of the different siege machinery. This is touched on but not nearly enough.

Interesting & Detailed Account of Ancient Siege Warfare

After I finished reading this book I was not too sure how I felt, I was a bit ambivalent about how good or bad it was. At times I found it hard going to continue but then it picked up with a very interesting account of some particular siege or battle. However other times I felt it was becoming repetitive, the same story with variations on the number of dead or the way the victors tortured or killed their enemies. There is no doubt that the author has thoroughly researched the subject but the narrative came across a bit dry in the end. The chapters on the Roman army's conduct of siege operations stand out. There were a number of line drawings and maps but I found the maps to be of poor quality, I'm sure better ones could have been found. If you are looking for a detailed account of how siege operations were carried out in ancient times and the result of those sieges then this is the book for you. I can only say that I did not find the narrative as free flowing as I usually like in a book, it was almost like reading a school text book at times. I would recommend this book only for those who have a keen interest in the subject matter.

About the Author

Luigi Fugaro

Luigi Fugaro had his first encounter with computers back in the early 1980s, when he was still a kid. He started with a Commodore VIC-20, passing through a Sinclair, a Commodore 64, and an Atari ST 1040; here, he spent days and nights giving breath mints to Otis. Then, he took a big jump with a 486DX2 66 MHz, and he started programming in Pascal and BASIC. GOTO 1998. He started his career as a webmaster doing HTML, JavaScript, Applets, and some graphics with PaintShop Pro. He then switched to Delphi and Visual Basic, and finally, he could start working on Java projects. While working on Java, Luigi met his mentor, Gianluca Magalotti, who helped him a lot in acquiring more hard and soft skills. Luigi has been developing all kinds of web applications in Java―dealing with both backend and frontend frameworks for various system integrators. In the last system integrator he worked for, Luigi met another special person, Pierluigi Lucci, who trusted and helped Luigi in his career, which earned Luigi the SCJP 6 and SCEA 5 Java certifications. Then, he took the big jump toward Red Hat. Luigi is now working with Red Hat as a senior middleware consultant, where he can count on a group of highly talented people to help him daily. He would like to mention all of them, but two of them need a special mention: uL, the pragmatist, and aL, the grandpa, for helping Luigi during his hard days at work.

Very good addition to your tech library!

Here are my insights about the book: after the first introduction chapters (1-3), the book moves to the Management of logging resources with a set of recipes for configuring the logging subsystem. Next an in-depth description about the clustering options with focus on the mod_cluster module for load balancing. In the following chapters the author moves the focus to the Management of server resources with two detailed chapters about the Command Line. I found these chapters quite useful both as a guide and as a reference.
Following up two chapters about Hardening WildFly which explain how you can harden WildFly communication, such as Web Console communicating on secure channels via HTTPS, domain controller, and host controller.
Last but not least the book also includes some useful recipes about Openshift and Docker whichcan help you to deploy your application on WildFly directly on the cloud or using Linux containers.
I've found this book a very good addition to my library and would recommend it to anyone approaching this technology.

Directly from a Red Hatter expert this is a really useful book if you need to start with this totally new version of the formerly known as "Jboss" application server. The core features are explained by examples eg: clustering, HA, datasoruces etc. The book also goes into deep dive of the powerfull CLI management tool.
The book covers the new features and guides you to using WildFly in the OpenShift cloud environment and there is a really on the edge chapter on Wildfly and Docker.

Great reference for Wildfly CLI recipes

I've been working with Wildfly (or JBoss Application Server) for around 5 years now, but still find myself having to reach out to google for those recipes that I need every now & then. Wildfly Cookbook is now my go-to cache for all those recipes.
* Need to create a datasource? It's there!
* Need to harden your Wildfly instance? It's there too!

Chapters 1, 2 & 3 are your standard get started chapters. Where this really shines is Chapter 5 onwards. I really like the fact that JMeter is used in conjunction with the recipe, it differentiates it from a cut-paste job from any internet blog.

The chapters on load balancing & server hardening is are great additions as well, one that is of great help if you're involved with DevOps (or just plain interested in how that works).

Finally, I read the chapters on OpenShift & Docker with great interest, as I hadn't delved into them as much as I'd wanted to, & this gave me a great opportunity to actually try Wildfly on OpenShift/Docker hands-on.

Having CLI recipes is great because it's exceptionally easy to automate your server administration (as opposed to point & click web interfaces).

Finally, a word of warning, if it's not readily apparent from the description, the cover & the review material available, this is NOT a resource for folks looking to learn more about JavaEE, or JavaEE development on Wildfly. This covers server administration, deployments, etc, development isn't this books focus. A great book (also by Packpub) that I'd recommend for that is Java EE 7 Development with WildFly by Michał Ćmil, Michał Matłoka & Francesco Marchioni.

Good content but not very functional.

I use this science text for our homeschool it is a great science text but not very functional. There are a lot of lessons that require printouts that come only in the teacher addition. Only problem is, is that the teacher addition is all online and very difficult to use. Also due to their copyright policies you can not print the necessary printouts off the web page. This causes several of the experiments to be unusable unless you create your own printouts (which kind of defeats the purpose of buying the program in the 1st place)

It's no wonder America is failing. This book was given to my fourth grader as his main science book this year. The layout is crap. The information is dull. The language is appalling.

take it for what it is

I am in my fourth term of learning C++, and this book was theone required for my first two terms. I came into the program at myUniversity with no programming experience at all, and I was able to quickly understand basic concepts by having a great instructor and reading (and re-reading) this book. While not a great reference, I still consult it for basic concepts I might forget after a long break. If you view it for what it is -- an introductory book -- then I highly recommend it. I found the sections on looping and other conditionals very helpful that first term; functions were handled well, too. This is a book to read and re-read. If the class construct freaks you out, then read that chapter two or three times and you will get the basic idea. A lot of my classmates hated this book -- I never really got a good reason why. Unfortunately, the section on pointers is a little weird, although the info is accurate. I never liked the programming case studies at the end of the chapters either -- they didn't seem to flow well from the chapter material presented. Looking back at the book, especially as an intro book, I can't say enough how well the sections on classes were presented. For some reason, the writing style clicked with me, and the info provided a strong enough basis to further dive into the class construct -- which is an important topic and is the backbone of Abstract Data Types and Object Oriented Programming. Get another book, or a good instructor, for basic pointer concepts. Decent for linked lists. Minimal recursion. From what I've heard, C++ Primer Plus by Prata is a better book in some ways. That's next for me to get.

The best textbook on ANYTHING that I have ever used!

This textbook is the best I have ever used in any course, and I have a Ph.D. in psychology so I have had a LOT of courses. As a beginning programming student, I found this book to be clear, concise, entertaining, and very helpful. When you get tired of all of the new terms, the author "takes a break" and either introduces you to a famous figure in the history of computer science, or does a little "chatting" about tips -- stuff that it would be helpful for you to remember, but not stuff you'll be tested on. I have been in the beginner's course for 2 months now, taking a web-based course, and have learned an AWFUL LOT just from this book. You WILL LEARN introductory C++ from this book.

This book puts into visual perspective the spirit, soul, and body of man and the gateways into those parts that need to be cleansed, and open so that we can communicate with God at the deepest and most amazing levels. It is very simple and not a large read but it packs a huge punch and brings much very useful information. I wish I had known this information years ago...It would have helped me be closer to God even sooner because it is some of those very gateways that were blocked on my part that kept me from being closer so long.

About the Author: Iver Strandberg is a native of G�teborg, Sweden, born in September, 1899. At two years of age, he came to America in his mother's arms, and was brought up in the timber region of northern Wisconsin. His first home in this country was a log cabin. In those surroundings his appreciation grew for the natural beauties of God's creation which later served as the basis for his poetic works. As a youth, Iver read intensely about poets and poetry, and from 1921 to 1955 he wrote some one thousand poems. His poetic vision is spurred on by a firm Bible-based belief that paradise will be an earthwide reality in the near future. It is hoped that the readers of this book will appreciate more than the mechanics of rhyme and meter, but rather will share with Iver Strandberg some truly inspirational experiences and scenes, as well as some occasional light humor.
