Waste of time and money - worst instructions ever

The animals are cute, but really nothing all that special... you can find comparable patterns for free by searching around on the web.

However, I was working on a doll for a friend, and wanted to give it a shirt. The little boy pattern has a shirt. Perfect, right?

Wrong.

These are the worst instructions I have ever tried to follow. I am an experienced (15+ years) crocheter, and have been making amigurumis for the last 4 years, but I was completely unable to replicate her results. When I got to the shoulder, I was lost: do I make it in turned rows? In the round? If in rows, where does it connect back to the main part of the shirt? Then how many stitches do I go over for the next shoulder? I tried 8 different ways of doing this, and still could not make sense of it.

Also, I had to dig through the glossary at the back of the book to figure out that the author assumes you will make a turning stitch for each row, when not working in the round. Maybe that's the standard, but I am used to patterns always including the turning stitch, especially when working on amigurumis, which can have very exacting construction due to the small size.

Maybe if the author had spent less time on cute little back stories for each doll in the book and more time on quality instructions, this book could have value. Or perhaps she could have included some work-in-progress photos, or even just a crochet diagram (I don't much like working from these, but they're better than nonsensical instructions).

The nail in the coffin was when I actually sought out the author's blog and sent her an email, hoping for some help. I asked, as nicely as possible, for some clarifications on the instructions, some pictures that would explain how to do it, anything at all. I was not vague -- I specifically said I was having trouble with the shoulder on the little boy's shirt. But I never heard one word in reply. So the instructions suck, and the author is not at all interested in helping her customers.

Super Cute Crochet Toys

Super-Cute Crochet: Over 35 Adorable Animals and Friends to Make is a fun book if you love to crochet Amigurumi toys! I found this book to be full of lovely patterns and pictures -- all easy to do! Since I create toys and dolls for my grandchildren and hope to donate more handmade toys to a hospital nearby, the more patterns that I can get, the better! I, personally, love the book! If you are only looking for ONE extremely easy and inexpensive book -- I recommend buying Easy Crochet Critters (Leisure Arts #75266) by Lion Brand Yarn; however, if you are looking forward to making a large amount of toys -- BUY THIS BOOK!

OF COURSE they are SMALL!!

Since I AM purchasing this book which isn't here yet, this is more of a review criticism of the negative comment that the animals are "tiny"
This book is for crocheting AMIGURIMIs Which by Defination means "SMALL, Cute". Naturally they are ting abd neabt for collectors and or children's poket animals.
IF youi want BIGGER toys all you have to do is change the yarn and hook size upward!

This book pretty much says it all, and does it very well

A brilliant exposition, which covers every aspect and type of use made of the art of proverbs in this linguistic region (the Akan peoples inhabit much of the southern half of Ghana, and include the large sub-groups Ashanti and Fante, as well as several others). There are many books which collect large numbers of African proverbs, Akan/Ashanti and otherwise, but few give any sort of pithy account as to how they are used by the people, the part creativity plays in their use, and so on. Nor do they attempt to portray the brilliance of many of the users, how the lists of proverbs are maintained, how choosing a proverb is contextually/determined in a specific situation, etc. There is even the factor of how the correct vs. incorrect and/or creative use of a proverb leads to respect being gained or lessened by the individual using it.
There are proverb performance artists; proverbs are used during judicial proceedings, and in educational and religious contexts. Mr. Kwesi Yankah does a masterly job of dissecting the rhetoric, by citing 72 specific proverbs, documenting and further explaining how each was used in a specific situation. The textual analysis is exemplary. For each of the 72 situations, he identifies the type of interaction (e.g. formal judicial proceedings, church sermon, conversation between two people etc.), size of audience, age and gender and/or occupation of the proverb speaker, place/location, and original language. If the proverb was used in the midst of a longer oratorical passage, enough of that verbiage is included so the context is evident - the proverb itself is italicized.
In an appendix, Yankah lists these 72 situational proverbs in Twi (the language of the Akan peoples) along with the equivalent English. All in all, the treatise is well documented with appropriate footnotes, and there is an ample 14-page bibliography of works cited. This is a well-designed and well-executed work - it's not too difficult reading even for a non-specialist such as myself. There are wider implications for world culture as a whole: it helps to dispel the idea (which is probably still floating around) that African discourse is somehow of less substance than that of say, those of Euro-America and Asia. In 1985, it won Indiana University's Esther Kinsley Award for Best Dissertation.
[One of the earliest Akan proverb collections, J. G. Christaller's 'Tshi Proverbs' (1879), had an odious preface which stated that, in effect, the main use for such a work would be for Christian missionaries to better understand how to manipulate the natives to convert to his religion. Christaller's proverbs remained untranslated until later, when Rattray and others began that further work, and for the same stated objective. Many of these other early collectors/translators were also missionaries.]
Note that here Mr. Yankah's surname is spelled incorrectly as "Yanka". For other of his various, available works - please search the correct spelling.
Also please note that there is a serious pagination error in chapter 8: "Proverb Rhetoric and the Judicial Process". You'll have to read the pages in the following order: 214 . . . 218 . . . 215 . . . 216 . . .217 . . . 219. After that everything reverts to normal.

irreverent but informed

The previous review is a bit unfair and so I am moved to add a few words. Yes, if you are drawn to an environmentalism that is underwritten by spiritual or mystical motivations, then you probably will be irritated by Phillips' irreverence. However, there is much to be said for this literate and well-researched book. Phillips has astoundingly wide interests, which include contemporary environmental thought, environmental history, environmental literature, and the history, philosophy, and sociology of science. His book does contain some positive suggestions about how the environmental movement might take a more pragmatic approach and so become more successful. Also, there is some pleasure, and perhaps glory, to be found in the witty and withering barbs that Phillips hurls at his objects of study. The environmental movement is too important to recoil from criticism like this. It can only be strengthened by the intelligent, informed and, sometimes, acerbic voice of Dana Phillips.

Straightforward and unapologetic

While some readers may be offended by the author's unromantic views of nature writing and ecocriticism alike, Dana Philips is at least honest about his pragmatic and often scathing opinions and analyses. He refuses to be swept away by the mystery of nature and believes that it is useless and counter-productive for nature writers to reflect on their own act of reflecting. I would like to have known that this was a dissection of specific authors and even specific works of those authors (Dillard, Lopez and more), before purchasing it; by the title, I was anticipating a broader philosophic or paradigmatic work. I found myself laughing aloud at a few points, when Philips' clever writing style surprised me with an unexpected turn of phrase or an unusual visual image!

Brilliant, tough, unsentimental: all good for ecocriticism

Phillips has made an outstanding contribution to ecocriticism, and I see it as positive. He makes thoughtful connections to contemporary theory but obliterates cultural studies and the school of social construction, which have denigrated natural science for too long and discouraged humanists from absorbing the realities of biome and genome. Yes, his tone is brusque but not dismissive; he echoes the kind of discussion familiar to philosophers, where logic and reason prevail over sentiment. The claim that he has nothing new to offer is wrong: in the late chapters he calls for a "wild" ecocriticism that is diverse, eclectic, and pragmatic. I see this approach as far more constructive, and instructive, than the dewy-eyed reverence that preoccupies too many nature writers and their critics to date. Fifty years ago, Leslie Fiedler performed the same service for New Criticism, when he called Huck back to the raft. Instead of reacting defensively, I hope ecocritics will realize that a good mind and wit has taken up their cause and urged them to get serious and active: a languid pastoralism will not win attention in the academy or clean house at the Department of Interior.

I am not very outgoing, so I thought this book would help me start some conversations with people I don't know. Yes, there are some questions I never would have thought to ask, an some questions I had fun answering my self. However, there are so many duplicates! Just the same question rewritten 5 different ways! Not to mention, most of the questions were a little too personal to be asking someone you don't know. It is a great book to sit down with your mate on a rainy or snowy winter night,and each read a few questions. If for nothing else, you may learn a few new things about yourself!

I love this book

I love this book. It has helped me get the courage to get to know people in my life that i want to be closer to and have not found the words to ask in the proper way and really get to know the person for who they really are. I am kind of a shy person and do not really know how to be blunt and get right to the heart and core of what i am trying to ask. So all in all, this book has helped me tremendously.

I was able to pick this up in a promotion from the manufacturer in exchange for my honest review and they have most certainly earned my business and i am referring this book to all my friends and family as a way to increase the relationships, and knowing the people in their lives.

About the Author

Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Okalahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world.

Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

A solid, in-depth exploration

I am almost completely new to programming and am trying to teach myself. I started with a computer science textbook on Python and then moved on to the 8th edition of this book. Around Chapter 14, I saw they they had come out with the 9th edition, so I purchased it. I am studying for the Java SE7 Associates certification next month, so I started over at the beginning of the book and have read back to where I was in the 8th edition (Chapter 16). There have been many changes and updates. One of the most visible changes is that the review questions are now spread throughout the chapter rather than all together at the end of the chapter. The video notes are now available. While not adding a lot of commentary to what's already in the text, I do find it helpful to watch the videos (which feature the examples being worked out for you). There are also practice tests available online. I've taken the first two of these and find them quite challenging and helpful (especially with a certification exam around the corner for me!). I am reading other texts as well (Head First Java and Java The Complete Reference). Liang's book is hefty and taking me forever to get through, but I'm confident that I'll be very solid by the time I'm done. The author, by the way, is very responsive via email whenever I come across typos in the book. These errata are listed on the book's website, so it's good to check there whenever you move on to a new chapter. I highly recommend the book!

KINDLE Version NOT Worth It

NOTE: This is a review of the KINDLE version. The content of the book is fine; please use other reviews to guide your purchase based on content. My objective is to inform the buyer if they want, or not, the Kindle version.

The caption claiming this book looks exactly like the print version is inaccurate. The reason is that 40% of the book is missing. How? The book comes with a code that enables you to download the other 40%, or "bonus" material. The eBook version does NOT come with that. It is an additional $24 charge. In other words, you don't get the 'whole book' unless you buy the 5 lbs of dead trees.

The Kindle app on the computer is clunky, making reading this an arduous task at best; for example, you'll wear out your mouse scroll wheel trying to scroll down the page. This isn't a PDF and the Kindle software is impotent in comparison to PDF reader software.

The price *SEEMS* good, until you realize that you'll have to pay an additional $24 for the "bonus" chapters, and another $42 for the MyProgramming Lab access. If the price was $80 for the eBook, added to the $24 for the rest of the book plus the $42 for the lab access, the $150 list price is exactly the same. BUT, you *cannot* sell an eBook, but you CAN sell the paper book. Getting just $5 for the paper version makes that a better deal financially, even if it means laying waste to a virtual forest for this massive tome.

In other words, it will COST YOU MORE MONEY for the Kindle version. The only two benefits are the text tools (search, copy/paste) and the lack of needing Conan the Barbarian to tote it around for you.

If You Want To Learn Java...BUY THIS BOOK!

Over the years, I have learned numerous technologies via the self taught, read a book method. There are many good books available. This book is by far the best I have used.

The material is laid out to allow for students with many different agendas. The different approaches and relevant sections are documented at the start of the book. I opted for the cover to cover approach and am glad that I did. This book is clearly written in a way that explains the concepts and techniques to both newcomers and experienced readers. As might be expected, there are numerous code examples in the book. While a few may leave the reader scratching their head asking why, following through always leads to the answer. Additionally, many of the early examples are expanded in subsequent sections, gradually leading to fun and/or useful applications.

The content also goes far beyond the typical introduction to a programming language or environment. In the later sections, data structures, networking, graphics and a number of other areas that make a real difference in the student's ability to be productive are presented.

This book is clearly written with the student in mind. Each chapter has a large end section consisting of highlights, review questions and programming exercises. The exercises are incredibly rich and diverse. The author has clearly spent considerable time putting together these exercises so that students from diverse areas of business, science, etc. will find relevant examples of applying their new found skills to their immediate needs.

The only negative I found, is that there are some places in the book where there are small typo and similar errors. The author encourages the reader to let him know if any are found. I did just that, and to my (pleasant) surprise, got responses every time, and not just a canned auto reply.

I have recommended this book to a number of friends and colleagues. If you are reading this and trying to decide what book to get...this is the one.
