Problem with this book is that it is very small.I want to know more about Jalal AL Din Rumi.This book tells many things about this person in short way.Little biography of Rumi is given in this book.Some words of wisdom from Rumis writings are also given in this book.Very small but interesting book this is.

Very impressive book to read! This is very helpful book. I am about to take the course online but I am glad to have found this book. I know that this will help me with stress and be more productive with work and life. The main thing that I feel for anyone especially myself is that if we can redirect our brain from always going to the negative, bad and etc. This would be a great thing for everyone. So much worth reading book!

A great guide to the leading edge

Personally, I speculate that Google Glass will never be a big hit for use by every person, every day. I do, however, think that Glass will be a game-changer in some very important contexts, including education, any technical activity involving visual inspection of things like engines, myriad uses for hobbyists, possible medical applications, and many others.

There are a lot of sophisticated apps to be written in support of all that! I doubt that we will see many great Glass apps in the near term that are cheap or free. Useful Glass apps will be high-value apps that sell at strong prices, and will be well worth the developer's time.

This book considers that this technology is on the leading edge, and makes its audience clear from the start. You'll need skills, and of course Glass, to unlock the excellent hands-on potential of this book. However, it also does a great job of conveying the possible applications of Glass, making it worthy of review even if heads-down coding isn't in your short-term plan.

Glass enthusiasts can skim over the source code and enjoy the author's patient, playful style. Developers, reading this book with intent to acquire new skills and experiment with Glass, will find it is rich with the detail they need to get from point A to point B. This book is a good resource for anyone thinking of working with Glass.

Great book, comprehensive like no other

Glass is such a new device that we are only beginning to figure out what it can do. While you can take almost any Android app and run it on Glass (since Glass is also an Android device), the resulting user experience would be a disaster. It'll take time and experience to figure out what works best on Glass. Beginning Google Glass will get you started--and more.

The book is very very comprehensive. The first three chapters cover what you would expect out of any book on Glass:

Chapter 1. Getting Started.- Talks about Glass, the GDK, and the Mirror API. If you already know what these are, you should be able to skip this chapter.

Chapter 2. Hello, Glass! Your First GDK App.- Shows you how to create a project. Worth reading if you are just starting out, but if you've already created a Glass project you should be able to skip.

Chapter 3. Glass User Interface.- Discusses live cards and immersions--the pinnacles of Glassware. Peruse these sections until you feel comfortable with them because they are the foundation of every Glassware.The chapter also shows you how to create immersions based on OpenGL, but that may not be for everyone.

There are seven chapters to go and the essentials have already been covered. The rest of the book is what makes it comprehensive. It does a great job of showing you what Glass can do and teaches you how to leverage existing open source software to implement complex features.

Chapter 4. Camera and Image Processing.- Shows you how to take pictures, implement a custom camera app that supports preview and zoom, recognize QR codes, utilize Tesseract's OCR engine, and create Glasssware that uses OpenCV (i.e., a computer vision library).

I found that recognizing QR codes is a particularly awesome asset for Glass development.I forgot who developed it, but the system that lets doctors pull up a patient's information by scanning a QR code in the room is a great example.

Chapter 5. Video: Basics and Applications.- Capture videos, use OpenCV to process videos, use FFmpeg to process videos, and play youtube videos on Glass. OpenCV and FFmpeg are a pain in the behind to setup, but having instructions that we know work on Glass makes the process less painful.

Chapter 6. Voice and Audio.- Play sounds, record audio, detect pitch (e.g., as in a guitar tuner), detect DTMF touchtones, and indentify songs ala shazam.

Chapter 7. Networking, Bluetooth, and Social.- Get information from web servers with HTTP, use socket programming to build clients and servers, and develop with bluetooth classic and low energy. This chapter shows you quite a lot about talking to other devices.

Chapter 8. Location, Map, and Sensors.- Contextual awareness is essential on Glass. Glassware should present timely and relevant information, and contextual awareness helps you do just that. This chapter shows you how to get the user's location with GPS and how to display geographic data on maps. Note that the maps used in this chapter are the same Google Maps that you know and love from your mobile devices. It is not the perspective map used by Glass's default navigation app.

This chapter also shows you how to use the inertial sensors of Glass (that is, the compass, accelerometer, and magnetometer). Together, these sensors let you figure out where the user is looking at. These sensors let your apps use head gestures on Glass. The chapter also shows you how to detect shake gestures, make a compass, and detect fluctuations in magnetic field with the magnetometer.

Chapter 9. Graphics, Animation, and Games.- With graphics and animation, you can implement custom Views that meet the specific needs of your Glassware. This chapter also shows you how to run three game engines on Glass: Cocos2d, libgdk, and AndEngine. If you find the mini games Glassware entertaining, this chapter is for you.

Chapter 10. The Mirror API.- Although the focus of the book is on the GDK, this last chapter talks about the Mirror API. It shows you how to setup a Mirror API project with either PHP or Java, and it covers how to create static cards, subscriptions, and more. It also shows you how to create a hybrid app that uses both the Mirror API and the GDK. In this case, the Mirror API is used to start the GDK app.

Overall, the book is a great read. You will certainly get lots of ideas for Glassware while reading it. The book will show you how to get started implementing them.

Helpful for non-engineers too!

“Beginning Google Glass Development...Start Developing Google Glassware today!" is meant mainly for software engineers, but I read the non-technical parts, and it's a great book! I had not really followed the whole story very closely behind Google Glass until I read Jeff's book. It's part of the "wearable computing movement", which I now appreciate to be a very significant emerging segment. As Jeff notes, "can you imagine the use of Glass in cases where smartphones are not appropriate or convenient, especially where hands-free devices are required or when the moment would be over if you had to take the time to reach for your smartphone to take a picture or video? Or imagine you need to access some quick information or have answers to some quick questions while your hands are busy with, for example, cooking, fixing something, playing with your kids, playing cards, or even doing surgery."

Jeff references silicon valley legendary VC and forecaster, Mary Meeker: "wearable computing is emerging as the type of significant technology shift that will drive innovation in the way personal computing did in the 1980s or mobile or tablets are doing now".

Jeff's book describes how to write android apps for Google Glass, that can take advantage of many native capabilities of Glass including voice recognition and other types of audio, video, networking, geo-location, graphics, image processing, among many other core features.

For me, I look forward to when manufacturers can miniaturize the tech so that it can fit into a normal sized-glass frame. That will happen. Imagine all of the applications in the military, health care, law enforcement, manufacturing, distribution...on a walk... I highly recommend this book.

All 173 men and teenage boys were executed while the women were sent to the Ravensbruck concentration camp. Ten Lidice children, who exemplified Aryan traits, were selected for "Germanization." They were sent to Lebensborn training centers, forced to speak only German, given new names, and indoctrinated into the Nazi ideology. They were then adopted by German families. The rest of the children of Lidice were gassed. Based on extensive research and interviews with survivors, Wolf tells the heart-wrenching story of the fictional Milada, who is sent to a Lebensborn center and adopted by the commandant of Ravensbruck. Readers are quickly immersed into her character, gaining a painful understanding of her intense struggle to hold onto her true self and identity. A very interesting story based in fact.

I found myself talking to my grandchildren about that tragic period in history. One only 11 years old, about the same age as the girl in this book. As I'm now 75 years I was profoundly sad explaining to them the facts of WW2. They picked right up on my feelings as they were most interested in the facts.

I loved this story! I couldn't help but be touched by the characters. It's an eye opener and would recommend this book to all!

A Must Read about a little known event!

Like the Diary of Anne Frank and Number the Stars, the book is about events of the Holocaust. What makes it different from the two mentioned is that it's about a chapter of the Holocaust that is not widely known - the destruction of the town of Lidice. This was a small village that Hitler tried to literally wipe off the map. Wolf's book takes you there through the eyes of Milada, a little girl taken from her Czech family and "adopted" into a Nazi family. I couldn't put the book down, and the story left me wanting to learn more about the Lebensborn program and the families of Lidice. Though written for a young audience (the heavy subject matter is handled gently but by no means "fluffy")it's must read for anyone - adults included - wanting to know more about the Holocaust.

About the Author
Stephen Marshak is Professor of Geology and Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. from Cornell University. He has served as Chair of the Division of Structural Geology and Tectonics of the Geological Society of America. Dr. Marshak has written numerous research articles on topics in structural geology and tectonics, and has authored or co-authored four books: Basic Methods of Structural Geology; Earth Structure, Earth: Portrait of a Planet; and Essentials of Geology.

The best of geology

This book is indeed the best introduction to geology you can ever get. It has the most fundamental knowlegde and at the same time it includes a higher level. So it is for all people with an interest in geology. If you are a student and even if you are a normal person with great interest this book will become your favorite. It combins beautyful pictures with nice drawings and great text. It gives a good picture of what it is like to be a geologist and what the work includes.

Simply: you get the best of geology!! Injoy:o)

New Revised Edition Is Even Better

The sub-title 'Portrait of a Planet' gives you some idea of what this book is all about. It is almost a coffee table picture book, filled with photographs of the earth. Yet at the same time its first edition became the text book of choice at over 300 colleges and universities around the world.

This is the brand new second edition. The new edition has taken comments about the previous edition, integrated them with the results of recent discoveries and more examples, photographs, art work, and text to make the second edition even better. Each chapter of the first edition was sent to an expert reviewer (a world leader on that particular subject) for comment.

The biggest change in the new edition is to stress plate tectonics earlier and stronger to provide the underlying theory that covers most of current geologic thinking.

I also like his explanation of the oil situation. He looks at alternatives and points out that we may well be living in a unique time of history.

Excellent!

This books serves as an excellent introduction to geology and earth sciences. It is extremely well written and explains difficult concepts well. Because it is written as a college textbook the examples and analogies given are drawn from common experience that are easy to understand.
Among the best part of the book are the illustrations which are beautiful to look at and supplement the text expertly, again reinforcing concepts.
I appreciated the way the author has integrated the broad theory of plate tectonics throughout all sections of the book. In particular he has expertly woven the theory of plate tectonics into the history of the earth's evolution and how that in turn has led to the evolution of life.
This book is a great introduction for college students and for the educated layman looking to better appreciate and understand this wonderful place we call earth.
