About the Author
DAVID SHIRREFF�has been reporting on finance since the early 1980s. In 1987 he co-founded Risk magazine. The Case for 3 Types of Banks

Sherriff brings a well-informed European perspective to Bernie Sanders call to break up the big banks. He says that governments need to break up the world’s biggest banks into 3 types (1) retail, (2) corporate / wholesale, and (3) investment, with an absolute cap on assets, perhaps $100 billion, and with investment banks run as partnerships to increase accountability. His goal: big reductions in oligopolistic behavior, conflicts of interest, hidden risk taking, and complexity.
Sherriff would also abolish the practice of allowing big banks to “calculate their own risk weightings” for complex financial products, even if it means simplified risk estimates by regulators. Credit default swaps would be strongly regulated to prevent abuses. Shadow banks, like hedge funds and private equity firms, would not be directly regulated, but big players like investment banks, pension fund, and insurance companies could only invest 5% to 10% of their assets in the shadow banking system. He also recommends a financial transaction tax and a hard cap, say $500,000, on the annual compensation of employees of the regulated banks.
This is book is concise and thoughtful. However others might recommend stronger regulation of derivatives and the shadow banking system.

About the Author
Philip Newcob is CEO of The Software Revolution, Incorporated (TSRI), and an internationally recognized expert in the application of artificial intelligence and formal methods to software engineering. Over the course of 32 years, he has done groundbreaking research in the application of artificial intelligence, software engineering, automatic programming, and formal methods technology to industrial software problems, including 13 years at the Boeing Artificial Intelligence Center as a Principal Computer Scientist before founding TSRI in 1995. Mr. Newcomb formulated the conceptual product framework and led a team of computer scientists to develop the software transformation technology and products offered by TSRI.

Systems modernization scenarios, tasks, and case studies

Since the marketplace is largely absent of texts discussing the modernization of software systems architecture, this reviewer did not know what to expect from authors William M. Ulrich and Philip H. Newcomb. In addition, the space of this topic can be very large depending on how it is defined. In the opinion of this reviewer, the best part of what the authors present are the ten case studies, which comprise the bulk of the content, but the initial chapters and concluding chapter provide some initial high-level guidance for managers looking to pursue modernization projects for the first time.

While the case studies presented here offer a variety of scenarios, the potential reader should note that there are some commonalities across these scenarios as well. The tooling and processes utilized across these case studies are shared to a large extent, although there is definitely variation depending on the systems and firms involved. Newcomb is CEO of The Software Revolution, Incorporated (TSRI), and so some of the commonality is due to the tooling and services provided by his firm, for example. The variation provided is largely due to type of system, associated technologies, and modernization approach.

During their initial discussion of challenges facing most enterprises today, the authors note that there is "a lack of understanding by executive teams regarding the impact of these issues and the actions that can be taken to address them for the betterment of the business environment" and that "it is of great concern that software and data assets are largely a mystery to management and planning teams". In following up this discussion with salvaging or rehabilitating legacy systems to provide business value, the authors offer "architecture-driven modernization".

Architecture-driven modernization is defined by the authors as "a collective set of tool-enabled disciplines that facilitate the analysis, refactoring and transformation of existing software assets to support a wide variety of business and IT-driven scenarios". Ulrich later discusses "the four corners of modernization", which consist of modernization scenarios, modernization tasks and disciplines, modernization technologies, and modernization standards, and argues that scenarios form the basis for modernization roadmaps.

Common modernization scenarios include IT portfolio management, replacement/rewrite, COTS package deployment, architecture consolidation, Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) migration, SOA transformation, data architecture migration, user interface refactoring, application improvement, language/source artifact transliteration and platform migration, and data conversion. Ulrich argues that management should be creative and look at a mix-and-match approach that addresses their requirements, and as a consultant who has been a participant in several such endeavors, this review wholeheartedly agrees with this assessment.

As an architect, this reviewer especially enjoyed the following case studies: "Modernization of the Eurocat Air Traffic Management System (EATMS)", "PowerBuilder/4GL Generator Modernization Pilot", and "Veterans Health Administration's VistA MUMPS Modernization Pilot". Note that each of the ten case studies was written by a different set of authors, so the subject concentration and writing style differ greatly between each. Diagram and table effectiveness also varies considerably, and it is no accident that apart from the subject matter of the three case studies sited, these case studies also excel in these areas.

The first of these three spends considerable time discussing all of the steps performed during transformation of Ada 83 code into C++ and Java (the Java solution won). concentrating on performance and duplication of the exact functionality provided in the original system. In contrast to low-level detail, the second of these three concentrates at the high-level, providing a high number of relevant architecture diagrams (to which this reviewer is partial). This reviewer enjoyed the third of these case studies from a business domain perspective, since it concentrates on health care system modernization.

While no book can offer detailed advice specific to the challenges a given potential reader might face in this space, in the opinion of this reviewer the authors offer solid introductory advice on how to start tackling a modernization project, and provide a wide enough variety of case studies that readers can get a feel for what they might encounter in pursuit of such a project. The discussions that the authors provide here definitely delve into the technical, but it is perhaps managers that will benefit the most from a reading of this book, especially the sections that discuss assessments and scenarios and issues underlying traditional approaches such as greenfield replacement and use of COTS software.

The book focuses on modernizing the application and data architectures of these massive and fragile systems as an alternative to the common approaches of re-writing, replacing with packaged software, or wrapping in middleware.

Part one explains architecture-driven modernization, its potential value over other approaches, creating a strategy, standards, and roadmap, along with the use of scenario creation. The second portion of book consists of ten in-depth case studies, spanning a range of technologies and organization types. The final chapter is a brief synopsis of initiating and sustaining modernization initiatives.

The audience for Information Systems Transformation: Architecture-Driven Modernization Case Studies is technology architects, application developers, system engineers and others with a strong interest in addressing the challenge of legacy systems. The first two parts of the book, especially the case studies, are very good, providing comprehensive information illustrated with charts and tables. The final chapter is very brief, containing superficial information about the reality of implementing modernization.

This book is recommended for anyone deeply interested in the topic, and system architects, while practitioners will want to supplement with additional reading about successful technology initiatives and centers of excellence.

A solid intro to architecture driven modernization

As the authors postulate, many enterprises maintain legacy software systems which are patched and updated when problems or new requirements arise. Business architectures, strategic visions, core product lines and structures evolve at a rapid pace. Without a modernization approach, stagnation if often imminent.

This book is divided into three parts. The first part defines and introduces architecture-driven modernization. The second part provides a series of ten case studies. The third part discusses pitfalls.

Although I am employed as a systems engineer and tasked primarily with maintaining large software systems, I have had experience similar to the Chapter 11 case study on model driven reverse engineering of a COBOL based application. In my case, I was faced with updating a DOS based database system written in Dataflex to meet new and emerging customer requirements on a different operating system. I attempted to use MDD, or model driven development, in the reverse engineering process. Just like their COBOL case, I was faced with code written in the 80's and early 90's, so there was a high degree of code and functional redundancy. As the author's documented, I also ended up with a reproduction of the existing system in another environment, and found the use of MDA less practical in practice as it sounds in theory. The main takeaway is that MDA is used to separate the design from the architecture and MDD is a method of rapidly determining a solution from abstracted models.

Overall, the authors do a thorough job of introducing the reader to architecture driven modernization. I hope this book makes it into the "right" hands because there are a lot of "drive by architects" out there that tout architecture driven approaches as the panacea to all modernization challenges. My point is, read this book and add its information to your arsenal. At a minimum, it provides a good starting point for your own modernization challenges.

What a revelation for me when I was introduced to Young Living and their wonderful products. I began to feel better and yet ...

First of all, let me say how impressed I am by Dr. Dan Purser. He is a most generous man with his time in helping us understand a very difficult subject one that is so important. Our health, and primarily how our hormones affect our entire body. Being of the older generation we were given very little information. What the Doctor said we or let me say I did. Yes, I took synthetic hormones and now see how little it did for me. Why did I gain so much weight and was so tired? Nobody knew just Diet was the buzz word. What a revelation for me when I was introduced to Young Living and their wonderful products. I began to feel better and yet not until I saw Dan Purser speak did I know what I had been doing to my body. That night I threw away all my medications that he had said were so bad for us. Alot of what he said went over my head, because it was so new and astonishing. I didn' know a Doctor, such a fine one with honours, would sit and take time after his talk for everyone to come and speak with him. He takes the time to message me when I ask him questions and so I wanted to go further and read his books. He makes a dull subject come alive with his humour and yet very documented and well written on a subject we all need and ultimately want to learn about. I am taking his progessence plus and other supplements he recommends and hopefully my health will improve to the point where others will notice and ask what is different about me. I am ordering hiis pamphlets and cards to distribute when the time comes.

Excellent health book for women!

Girls/Women are you suffering? This book gives you all the information you need to ensure you are getting the best care possible for women of all ages. It tells you what the optimum ranges are for optimum health and how to get there. The book lists symptoms and solutions!! I am so impressed I am going to buy 3 more, one for my GYN, one for my GP & one for a spare to give as a Christmas present (will probably need more). Don't stay in the dark, you have a the right to know what is going on. Awesome help, Thank You So Much Dr. Purser, wish you were closer.

The price of being a super hero

This book is a short entertaining read, worth your buck. Micro God helps to add emotional context to what it's really like to be a super hero. The protagonist, fearless to the point of apathy, is a character who's past is fascinatingly blurry with a future much the same. I look forward to seeing future work from this author.

Phenomenal (warning: spoilers)

Absolutely brilliant. You did an amazing job creating a plot that wasn't over done, yet had an extreme amount of possibilities to work with. I really enjoyed reading something so original that avoids so many clich�s. The science of how Clarke cannot create food was very interesting as well, and it reminded me of Jurassic park (in the sense of made up science sounding legitimate).
You did an amazing job creating likable characters, and balancing out some bad traits with redeemable qualities. Richard especially, considering times where he switches from being a bored, grumpy man to being amusing or happy. It also made me feel a strange sense of satisfaction when he killed Freddie G, because he mentions a few times about how death and murder don't entertain or bother him much anymore, yet when Chloe dies, he feels grief and intense sadness. However, he also feels the need for revenge and finds a sort of joy when he gets his revenge.
The setting I found very immersive, even though it didn't travel very far. I don't quite realize the small number of settings in the book until the end. You did an amazing job on giving the environments depth and description, even with little things like the dirty chairs in the beginning.

Me being a young writer, found a lot of joy and inspiration in your story. I hope to see more work from you, and you can bet I'll buy it!

Diamond in the Ruff

I won't lie. I bought this book due to the shameless plugging done by the author on his YouTube channel Krimson Rogue (which by the way, if you've ever wanted to watch comparisons between beloved books and hated adaptations). I was pleasantly surprised though. I have been a long time supporter of self published authors and, while I can say I don't like all the self published books I read (because honestly anyone can write some words and self publish now a days) I can say I occasionally stumble into one that should be published. This is one of those.

Author K.R. Martin wrote a fascinating character and faces the reality of having all the powers you always pretended you had as a kid. The hero is remarkably interesting to read about and makes the book fly past faster than it already goes.

I don't want to give much away as the book isn't long and it's hard to say something spoiler free. What I can say is. The characters are great, the story is great, and the writing style is great. The whole thing is just...great. I can say wholeheartedly that I will be on the look out for more by Mr. Martin.

Readers of Douglas's autobiography, The Ragman's Son (LJ 10/15/88), will speculate on the parallels in his first novel, which also chronicles the rise to fame of a Russian-Jewish emigre in Hollywood moviedom. The first half of the book alternates chapters about Moishe, who becomes director Danny Dennison, with the story of Luba, a Polish refugee who uses sex as a survival tool. She is a London prostitute when she first encounters the successful but unhappy protagonist, and he is at once captivated by her honest charm and the stories she tells about her hardknocks past. Luba makes Danny realize that he has prostituted his talent and denied a long-suppressed secret. This awkward attempt at fiction is devoid of both style and substance, but public libraries should anticipate high demand from the legion of Douglas's fans. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/90.

A must read book by Kirk Douglas.

A wonderful twitter. Mr. Douglas has a wonderful imagination, well developed characters and a great plot line. Dance with the devil is wonderful, you will enjoy the second book by Mr. Douglas, The Guy from is just as great.

Superbly written!. Kirk D is confirmed to be not only a great Hollywood actor but also a great novelist as well. It is said in his other book, The Gift that Danny's letter (care of Luba) to Patricia is found in this book but I can't find it here. Where is it?
