Starred Review. Grade 5–8—When resistance fighters assassinated the highest ranking Nazi officer in Czechoslovakia, Hitler sought revenge on the small village of Lidice. All 173 men and teenage boys were executed while the women were sent to the Ravensbruck concentration camp. Ten Lidice children, who exemplified Aryan traits, were selected for "Germanization." They were sent to Lebensborn training centers, forced to speak only German, given new names, and indoctrinated into the Nazi ideology. They were then adopted by German families. The rest of the children of Lidice were gassed. Based on extensive research and interviews with survivors, Wolf tells the heart-wrenching story of the fictional Milada, who is sent to a Lebensborn center and adopted by the commandant of Ravensbruck. Readers are quickly immersed into her character, gaining a painful understanding of her intense struggle to hold onto her true self and identity. A very interesting story based in fact.

I found myself talking to my grandchildren about that tragic period in history. One only 11 years old, about the same age as the girl in this book. As I'm now 75 years I was profoundly sad explaining to them the facts of WW2. They picked right up on my feelings as they were most interested in the facts.

I loved this story! I couldn't help but be touched by the characters. It's an eye opener and would recommend this book to all!

A Must Read about a little known event!

Like the Diary of Anne Frank and Number the Stars, the book is about events of the Holocaust. What makes it different from the two mentioned is that it's about a chapter of the Holocaust that is not widely known - the destruction of the town of Lidice. This was a small village that Hitler tried to literally wipe off the map. Wolf's book takes you there through the eyes of Milada, a little girl taken from her Czech family and "adopted" into a Nazi family. I couldn't put the book down, and the story left me wanting to learn more about the Lebensborn program and the families of Lidice. Though written for a young audience (the heavy subject matter is handled gently but by no means "fluffy")it's must read for anyone - adults included - wanting to know more about the Holocaust.

About the Author
Stephen Marshak is Professor of Geology and Head of the Department of Geology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, an M.S. from the University of Arizona, and a B.A. from Cornell University. He has served as Chair of the Division of Structural Geology and Tectonics of the Geological Society of America. Dr. Marshak has written numerous research articles on topics in structural geology and tectonics, and has authored or co-authored four books: Basic Methods of Structural Geology; Earth Structure, Earth: Portrait of a Planet; and Essentials of Geology.

The best of geology

This book is indeed the best introduction to geology you can ever get. It has the most fundamental knowlegde and at the same time it includes a higher level. So it is for all people with an interest in geology. If you are a student and even if you are a normal person with great interest this book will become your favorite. It combins beautyful pictures with nice drawings and great text. It gives a good picture of what it is like to be a geologist and what the work includes.

Simply: you get the best of geology!! Injoy:o)

New Revised Edition Is Even Better

The sub-title 'Portrait of a Planet' gives you some idea of what this book is all about. It is almost a coffee table picture book, filled with photographs of the earth. Yet at the same time its first edition became the text book of choice at over 300 colleges and universities around the world.

This is the brand new second edition. The new edition has taken comments about the previous edition, integrated them with the results of recent discoveries and more examples, photographs, art work, and text to make the second edition even better. Each chapter of the first edition was sent to an expert reviewer (a world leader on that particular subject) for comment.

The biggest change in the new edition is to stress plate tectonics earlier and stronger to provide the underlying theory that covers most of current geologic thinking.

I also like his explanation of the oil situation. He looks at alternatives and points out that we may well be living in a unique time of history.

This books serves as an excellent introduction to geology and earth sciences. It is extremely well written and explains difficult concepts well. Because it is written as a college textbook the examples and analogies given are drawn from common experience that are easy to understand.
Among the best part of the book are the illustrations which are beautiful to look at and supplement the text expertly, again reinforcing concepts.
I appreciated the way the author has integrated the broad theory of plate tectonics throughout all sections of the book. In particular he has expertly woven the theory of plate tectonics into the history of the earth's evolution and how that in turn has led to the evolution of life.
This book is a great introduction for college students and for the educated layman looking to better appreciate and understand this wonderful place we call earth.

Highly recommend for the veterinarian and for the horse breeder.

Excellent, practical book for the veterinarian who does equine reproductive work (whether occasional or regular), those want to get into equine reproductive work. Horse breeders can also benefit from this book as a number of the practices can be performed by them and it also an aid in understanding those that are performed by veterinarians. Highly recommend!

About the Author
Terry Stevenson has made Kenya his home since 1977 and is one of Africa's foremost bird-tour guides, having led numerous tours across the continent. He wrote "The Birds of Lake Baringo" while he was resident ornithologist there from 1981 to 1985, and is a member and advisor to the bird committee of Nature Kenya and to the East African Rarities Committee. John Fanshawe is the Africa consultant for BirdLife International. He has conducted research in the region for many years, and is widely regarded as unrivaled in his knowledge of East African birds and their conservation.

Best Field Guide to East Africa's Birds

Confronted by only one serious contender for the distinction of best field guide to the birds of East Africa, the Terry Stevenson/John Fanshawe entry wins by default. In featuring each descriptive summary and range map on a page facing the corresponding species illustration, the organization of the book qualifies it as a true field guide. While the field guide edition of "Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania" by Zimmerman, Turner, & Pearson incorporates several superior attributes, frequently including quality and variety of illustrations, it is essentially a condensation of a larger work and not organized in field-guide format. In covering a wider geographical area, the Stevenson/Fanshawe guide describes nearly 300 more species depicted on over twice as many color plates. Both of these fine books are potentially very useful for birding in Kenya and Tanzania, with the organization of the true field guide more likely to enhance its potential usefulness to those just beginning to appreciate the splendid avian diversity of East Africa.

Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa is superb!!

I think I have all the guides to the birds of East Africa in the last 30 years, but this most recent by Terry Stevenson and John Fanshawe is certainly the most comprehensive, artistically excellent and usable. Ber van Perlo's Collins Illustrated Checklist "Birds of Eastern Africa" is smaller and lighterweight but no comparison, nor intended to be, in description or plate detail. This new volume, with a 2002(!) publication date has amongst the best plates and abbreviated descriptions, in my opinion, ever published in a comparable volume on birds. Artists John Gale and Brian Small are fabulous (Norman Arlott lacks their skills, but does his subjects justice as well). It is a exceedingly worthwhile complement to Dale Zimmerman's larger format "Birds of Kenya and northern Tanzania" and includes all of Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi as well. Don't miss this book!

a must for the birder

everywhere you go in east africa you see birds. if you like them- you better be prepared for the trip! i got the guide a month before, and tried to get as familiar as possible with the birds before arriving to tanzania.

when we went on safari our guide pulled out his worn and faded zimmerman- the descriptions on one part, the illustrations on another and the distribution maps at the end. when i pulled my guide and gave him a try- he was very attached to his zimmerman but had to admit that the stevenson is indeed a worthy companion, with all the info about a species is on the same page...

compared to my european guide it is heavy and big- but the european contains only about 750 spp, while this one has more than 1200!

the illustrations are bright and clear.

i used it during my 30 day trip to tanzania and got more than 200 positive identifications, so i must go again to get the rest...

recommended!

There is no reason for this book

I need to get past my dislike for half books and just accept the fact that author’s think that they are necessary. Unfortunately, this is still a work in progress for me and when it comes to The Last Goodbye by JA Jance, I am still at a loss and scratching my head. What did this book prove? What did it add to the overall series? Very little as far as I am concerned.

The first 20% rehashes her last book and reintroduces characters, which if the reader has been following the series, already know.

The next 70% briefly touches on flying to Las Vegas, Ali and B’s wedding, Christmas and trying to track down the owner of a dog that Ali’s grandson has brought up to their hotel suite the day before the wedding is to take place.

I am not sure if others will be as bothered by where the title came from, but that is so not what I was expecting from a series that usually has a twist and a really bad guy.

Oh, and the last 10% are acknowledgements.

Other than knowing that Ali and B are married, there is no reason for this book.

"A Short But Good Story"

This is a short novella which moves right along with the wedding plans of Ali Reynolds and B. Simpson. They are in Las Vegas the day before their planned wedding at the Four Seasons Hotel. It's getting down to the wire, but B. takes Colleen and Colin, Ali's grandchildren, shopping while Ali rests comfortably in the soaking tub in their suite. It's 30 minutes before their dinner reservation when B. races in with the kids and the bellman who is loaded down with shopping bags. Also, wrapped in B.'s arms is a scared miniature longhaired dachshund that had been tossed out of a car onto the street, the car swiftly driven away. The kids are not about to turn the dog over to anyone, especially a dog pound. Arrangements have been made for a dog sitter while everyone attends the planned wedding rehearsal dinner. Ali has never had pets while growing up, and she just can't understand how she's going to cope with it on their honeymoon. She wants to find the owner for the little girl dog, so she and B. go to work gathering information while at the same time meeting all their obligations of the planned wedding for the next day. A short, sweet story which will bring a tear down your cheek. If you love dogs, you'll like this story.

JANCE IS ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE AUTHORS. I AM 85 YEARS OLD, AND I AM SURE I READ THE FIRST ONE SHE WROTE. LOVE HER CHARACTERS, THE LOCALE, THE PLOTS, AND THE SUBJECTS. NOT MANY AUTHORS STAY IN THIS STRATASPHERE, BUT JANCE NEVER SLIPS UP. AS LONG AS SHE WRITES THEM, I WILL READ THEM.
