Review
Really fascinating.
(Karsten Muller, Grandmaster, author of 'Fundamental Chess Endings')

A work that succeeds, which entertains and at the same time makes you better at playing the endgame.
(Uwe Bekemann, German Correspondence Chess Federation German Correspondence Chess Federation)

Not only a rich manual for the studista, but also quite useful for players, with endings to analyze and remember.

(Marco Campioli Torre & Cavallo)

Not to be missed at any price. I was absolutely knocked out by the quality of the content.

Artistry and ingenuity in a fun chess book
By Christopher J. Falter
I used to shun endgame studies because I thought they would not help me play better chess. Then last fall I read an interview with GM Levon Aronian, the Armenian chess wizard and current world number 2, who said he worked on endgame studies in order to prime his creativity and resourcefulness. Shortly thereafter, I read an article by GM Luke McShane in which he described using endgame studies to keep his tactics sharp. Perhaps I needed to adjust my thinking.

So I was not too surprised when I opened the pages of Timman's oeuvre; the world of endgame studies is magical indeed. In it, 2 lowly pawns on the seventh rank can defeat a king and a rook--unless the rook can perform the "Prokes Maneuver." They can even defeat a queen and bishop--although if the queen perform the Prokes Maneuver, the pawns lose. In this world, 3 pawns--two of them doubled, and none of them advanced past the 6th rank--can defeat a knight and a rook, as Sanz demonstrated against Ortueta in Madrid 1933. Or my favorite: one pawn on the 6th rank can overcome the combined might of a rook, knight and bishop! And here we have Herbtsman's ingenious 1937 study pointing the way.

I would not have known about this enchanting place without GM Jan Timman, former world #2, as my guide. A terrific study composer in his own right, he composed about half of the studies in this charming edition. Moreover, he is a fabulous raconteur. Timman tells interesting stories about how friends like Tim Krabbe prodded him to create more interesting studies. He also deconstructs how the small town of Poznan, Poland tried to put itself on the chess map by claiming that the Ortueta-Sanz combination originated in a game allegedly played there in 1931. Best of all, he is a superb teacher; he provides clear explanations of the purpose behind subtle, creative moves, with the right amount of detail in the chess analysis.

Chapters include:

* Miniature Studies (7 pieces or less)
* Rook versus Bishop -- the bishop can often draw, even with pawns on the board
* Preventing Pawn Promotion
* Various Promotion Combinations
* Knight Promotions
* Bishop Promotions
* Mating Patterns
* Stalemate Patterns
* Mutual Zugzwang
* Building a Fortress
* Systematic Manoeuvres -- Opposing pieces move up and down (or sideways across) the board in tandem. The Saavedra study, featuring a white king and black rook sashaying down the board, is perhaps the most famous example of this.
* The Disappearing Trick -- White makes a position reappear with one of his pieces removed in order to win.

He closes with a couple of chapters on miscellaneous themes and an index of composers.

Watching Timman unfold various studies inspired by a particular theme (such as the Ortueta-Sanz combination) is the chess equivalent of listening to Brahms' "Variations on a Theme by Josef Haydn." You repeatedly encounter the same theme, but each time it comes with a refreshing and inventive twist. So this book is a real artistic triumph.

At the same time, there is real practical value here for the intermediate club player and up (all the way up to grandmaster, if you believe Aronian and McShane). Right out of the gate, the first study Timman presents (Liburkin 1933) demonstrates the themes of pinning, mutual zugzwang, and dominating a bishop's short diagonal with a knight and king ... and with only 5 pieces on the board in the final position! A solid grasp of these themes is essential to mastering endgame technique, so dive in and enjoy the fun learning experience.

I cannot say Timman's work is completely free of problems. He discusses the Excelsior theme without really explaining what it is. In Timman's 1999 composition based on the Ortueta-Sanz theme (page 48), he explains that black could not play 14...Kf5 because white could capture the h7 pawn with check and then escape the perpetual. True enough, but white can also give mate in one with 15. Qg4#. In the very next study, he rejects 7. h3 for white because black can supposedly bring his bishop to g6 with a winning check 4 moves later. But in fact, 10...Bg6 is an illegal move. Fortunately, the frequency of the errors is low enough to avoid any unfavorable comparisons with other good chess books. The publisher also offers an errata page on their website.

Timman's book is probably too advanced for anyone rated under 1500 ELO or so. He frequently rejects a continuation because in the resulting rook endgame white can only draw (or some similar analysis), and if you aren't familiar with some endgame theory you'll miss the point. But from 1500 and up, I can heartily recommend Jan Timman's labor of love.

Full disclosure: The publisher provided a review copy of this book to me. My ratings of the publisher's books have ranged from 3 stars to 5 stars.

would be better if he checked his studies with a computer
By Richard Title
I like endgame studies, I like Jan Timman's writing, and I like the organization of this book. However, one serious critcisim: Timman should check his studies with a computer engine. He wrote this book in 2011, computers are cheap and strong engines are free, and it takes little time (far less than *composing* the study). So there's really no excuse for not doing so. How do I know he failed to check his studies? Well, in the 1st chapter alone, 2 out of 11 of his studies are unsound. Stockfish spots the flaws in < 1 second.

Example Page 16 , lower right, Timman 2008, "White to move and draw" The position is: WK on e2, WB on f2, WP on f3, BK on d5, BB on f6, BP on h7,g5,h5:

= = = = = = = =
= = = = = = = p
= = = = = b = =
= = = = = = p p
= = = = = = = =
= =- = = = P = =
= = = K = B = =
= = = = = = = =

In fact White is lost. Timman gives as the "solution": 1.Bh4!1 (his explanation marks), explaining "If Black captures the bishop he will be left with a bishop of the wrong color". I'll omit the rest of his "solution" because this first move is wrong and his statement is wrong. 1.Bh4? gxh4 2.Ke2 Bd4! 3.Kf1 h3 4.f4 Ke4 5.f5 Kxf5 and White loses because his king must move away from h1 and black will then queen with ...h2 ...h1. Timman's statement about "bishop of the wrong color" only applies if the defending king can reach the pawn's queening square.

Jan, if you're reading this, take my advice and start using computers. An unsound study is not art.

Chess book
By Ivar Uggerud
When i bought it, I hoped that this book was an encyclopedia of more or less complete chess ending, so i was a bit disapointed when i realized it was more a book of rarities/special studies.
