An Awful Book

The rating system requires that a reviewer give a book at least one star. A real shame because it is too generous with this book.

The author plays the victim card to the max. If only Bear Stearns received a capital injection all would be cured, says he. He completely overlooks the fact that the need for capital long pre-dated that last week plus of the firm's life. He glosses over that fact as well as the implications of the stunning implications of the 37 to 1 debt to equity that Bear had before the world changed. It's someone else's fault that the firm failed? Bear's capital would be wiped out if their assets declined in value by less than 3%. Think about that. THREE PERCENT.

And his discussion about how the decline in mortgage related securities was at the core of Bear's problems completely ignores the fact that Bear was itself a major player in the creation, sale and investment in these toxic securities.

So, at the end of the day, Bear lost it's capital because it held toxic securities it should have known better about, it acquired it with great gobs of borrowed money and was thinly capitalized. No where do you see that in this mess of a book.

The conspiracy theory that Bear was prevented from dealing with others at the end of it's life - especially foreign buyers who could complement their overseas operations with Bear's US presence - is pathetic. The stabilization of Bear precedent to its sale required a government based $30 billion loan through a bank. Does anyone believe that the US government could have or would have done so with a foreign entity whose finances it was unfamiliar with? Since the sale had to be achieved quickly to ensure that the contagion didn't spread through the system, a foreign acquirer was almost per se incapable of getting anything done over a weekend. Witness Barclay's desire to do something with Lehman in its last days, only to see it's own regulator say no.

And the philosophical analogues in this book goes on for pages ad in finitim. BORING - and an important and annoying tool in deflecting responsibility.

There are many other books that gives the full picture of Bear and it's fate. This one is to be avoided.

The son of a cutler, Diderot had an empathy with trades, tools and machinery that flowered magnificently in some of his contributions to the great Encyclopedie, which he edited with d'Alembert and published over a period of some twenty years. Diderot's range of contacts was prodigious: a close friend of Rousseau, Grimm and d'Alembert, a familiar figure in the literary salons of Paris, he also met and corresponded with Hume, Garrick and Laurence Sterne. It was the support of Catherine the Great (as her agent, Diderot in effect laid the foundations of the Hermitage collection) that led to the most extraordinary episode in an astonishing life: at the age of sixty Diderot travelled to St Petersburg where he drew up outline plans for the conversion of Russia into an ideal republic. P. N. Furbank's sympathetic and probing analysis of Diderot's work and influence was first published in 1992 and won a Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism.

"Truly, posterity would be an ungrateful wretch if it forgot me altogether," wrote Denis Diderot (1713-1784), "seeing how often I remember it."305 Diderot was not to be forgotten but rather misremembered, often as simply the cutler's son who for 20-plus years labored over that monument of the 18th century, the Encyclopedie. This account gives short shrift to a life that included a spell in prison, the writing of a pornographic novel, an eccentric family, a longtime love affair and a circle of celebrated friends, among them D'Alembert, Mme d'Epinay, Grimm and Rousseau. It also shortchanges the works that are uniquely Diderot's own. Furbank's ( E. M. Forster ) special strength is in illuminating Diderot's plays, philosophical writings, art criticism and fiction, lucidly following his struggle with two ideas--fiction as deception and fiction as illusion. Weaving together biography and criticism can distort a subject's chronology and can strain a writer's transitions and place undue demands on a reader, such as having to recall the dates of works each time they are mentioned. But works and life are unavoidably integral; as Marmontel notes, "He who knows Diderot only from his books does not know him at all." Furbank certainly does not fit into this category. Among the great philosophes of the French Enlightenment, Diderot--editor of the monumental Encyclopedie and the author of the enigmatic Rameau's Nephew --remains one of the most enduring and suggestive. British biographer Furbank ( Pound , Taylor & Francis, 1985; E.M. Forster , LJ 9/15/78) surveys Diderot's life, offering critical examinations of his major works, including cogent discussions of Letter on the Blind , The Nun , D'Alembert's Dream , and Jacques the Fatalist as well as Rameau and the Encyclopedie. Furbank is interested in how Diderot's work anticipates much in modern French thought, especially Barthes and Foucault. While this book lacks the detail and erudition of Arthur M. Wilson's Diderot ( LJ 8/72), it offers a fluent introduction to Diderot's life and work for contemporary readers. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.

A THOROUGH BIOGRAPHY OF A MAJOR ENLIGHTENMENT PHILOSOPHER

Philip Nicholas Furbank is an English writer, scholar and critic, who has written biographies such as E. M. Forster: A Life; his biography of Diderot won a Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism.

Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a French Enlightenment philosopher best known for his championing of the "Encyclopedia, or a systematic dictionary of the sciences, arts, and crafts." Furbank notes that "he could be clumsy in his dealings with public opinion," and that "He was eager to make converts, but not so much to atheism as to philosophy and reason."

Diderot's famous statement, "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest" is included, of course, with Furbank noting that "it was the benevolent Diderot who composed the phrase, in a festive New Year's Eve poem, nearly twenty years before the Revolution."

Furbank also observes that "It was no empty boast of Diderot's that he gave up half his existence to other people's concerns." He also writes, "In later years Diderot came to be known by the nickname of 'The Philosopher,'" although ultimately he had 'begun to fret at the role implied ... that is to say, a being made a sort of circus-turn or public monument of, a curiosity every visitor to Paris had to be shown."

This is an excellent and comprehensive biography of an important figure in philosophy (even though he, ironically, wrote no real "major" philosophic works).

About the Author

Timothy E. Speicher, PhD, ATC, LAT, CSCS, is president of the Positional Release Therapy Institute. He is considered a leading expert in positional release therapy (PRT). Speicher discovered and developed the fasciculatory response method (FRM), which has revolutionized the way PRT is applied, practiced, and taught. He established the Positional Release Therapy Institute to provide education on the FRM and PRT through the institute’s courses while allowing for its application to a patient population at the institute in Ogden, Utah.

Speicher frequently speaks on PRT to professional organizations and at conferences, and his research has been published in academic journals. In 2014 he received the first-place award for outstanding manuscript on evidence-based concept mapping by the Athletic Training Education Journal, published by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). In 2013 he won the journal’s first-place award for outstanding manuscript on case-based analogical reasoning.

Speicher, who has held several faculty and research appointments at various academic institutions, is a member of the NATA and was on the board of directors of NATA Research & Education Foundation. Currently, Speicher holds two faculty appointments: affiliate faculty for the University of Idaho, where he teaches neuroscience for the master’s degree in athletic training program, and assistant professor at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, where he provides instruction in evidence-based medicine for the doctorate in health science.

I like the book and it is helpful but I would like to see the videos and I have not been able to get on because you have to have a pass code that you don't receive thru Amazon I guess. So I am unable to use that part of the book and I really was hoping to use that with the instruction part of the book.

A Disappointing Companion to Just Me and My Dad

My little brother (now in his 30s) grew up to Mercer Mayer's Just Me and My Dad and Just For You. I bought those last year for our then-one-year-olds and was delighted that they were just as wonderful as I remembered. I ordered Just Me and My Mom recently and I'm so disappointed with the content. Unlike Just Me and My Dad, which has a sweet and happy story line, this book is just about Little Critter doing things he's not supposed to and people getting mad.

And, call me a feminist if you will, but I felt slighted by this book's treatment of the mom. Just Me and My Dad is all about an awesome camping trip little critter goes on with his dad, while Just Me and My Mom is all about this poor kid getting dragged to a bunch of boring museums where he's not allowed to touch things (and one with a bunch of lame pictures), and then a dress store with his mom. In fact, my husband was reading it to the kids the other night and I heard him flipping back through the pages, muttering to himself, "When was this WRITTEN?"

Shockingly, 1990. Feels more like the 1950s. And not that sexy John Hamm sort of way.

Fun read for kids and adults alike!

I loved the Little Critter books when I was growing up, and this is the first book I bought to read to my infant daughter. I get wonderfully nostalgic reading it to her and talking about how my mom used to read these books to me. Colorful pictures make it fun for even babies to look at. There's a lot of fun in them for adults as well, the looks on the mom's face is priceless! I didn't catch her exhaustion and frustration when I was a kid.

I use this book with my students to increase their vocabulary repertoire, and I find it very helpful for that purpose. However, I wish the lessons were more authentic and meaningful, as this would it easier for students to internalize the vocabulary words. Overall, I like the book and would recommend it as a vocabulary resource.

Chitra Agrawal is the author of Vibrant India: Fresh Vegetarian Recipes from Bangalore to Brooklyn and the founder of Brooklyn Delhi, an award-winning Indian condiments line. KALE YOGURT RAITA
All seasons • Serves 6 to 8 

This recipe is based on a spinach raita that was prepared by my friend Asha’s mom. It’s also loosely inspired by Greek tzatziki, which is usually made with cucumbers, chopped garlic, and lemon. It’s creamy and indulgent, and you can use it as a dip or eat it plain or with a meal. 

I often make this raita with sautéed kale, using any and all varieties—curly, red, and lacinato—and have also substituted different greens such as spinach, tatsoi, or mizuna in this recipe. 

You can eat the raita as a dip, or serve it as a side with rice and one of the hulis on pages 131 to 137. 

1 tablespoon mild-flavored oil such as canola 
1⁄4 teaspoon black mustard seeds 
1⁄4 teaspoon cumin seeds 
3 fresh curry leaves 
1 Indian green chile or serrano chile, chopped 
1 clove garlic, minced 
2 cups stemmed, chopped kale leaves 
1⁄4 to 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 
Squeeze of lemon juice 
2 cups plain yogurt, lightly beaten by hand 
2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt 
Freshly ground black pepper 
Red chile powder or paprika, for garnish 

Put the oil in a small frying pan or sauté pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add one black mustard seed. When the seed sizzles and pops, add the rest of the mustard seeds. Keep a lid handy to cover the pan while the mustard seeds are popping. When the popping starts to subside (a few seconds), add the cumin seeds. When the cumin seeds turn a darker shade of golden brown, turn the heat to medium-low. Rub the curry leaves between your fingers a little to release their natural oils, and drop them and the green chile into the oil. Cover immediately, as moisture from the curry leaves will cause the oil to spatter. Then stir to evenly coat everything with oil and continue to fry until the chile is less raw, 10 to 15 seconds. Stir in the garlic and sauté until fragrant, 10 to 15 seconds. 

Add the kale to the pan, followed by 1⁄4 teaspoon of the salt. Sauté until the kale is bright green in color and just wilted, 1 to 2 minutes. Add one good squeeze of lemon juice. Transfer the kale to a medium bowl and let cool. (I sometimes put it in the freezer for a few minutes if I’m in a rush.) 

When the kale is cool, mix it with the yogurt, sour cream, and remaining 1⁄4 teaspoon salt, or to taste. Garnish with a few grinds of pepper and a sprinkling of red chile powder on top before serving.

This cookbook is beautiful! I was so excited to purchase it when it came out the other week. My husband and I eat a primarily vegetarian diet at home, and this cookbook is filled with new and interesting veggie recipes. I have always enjoyed eating Indian food out, but as the author clarifies in the introduction, most of the Indian restaurants in the US feature the cuisine of Northern India. While I love all those rich curries and dishes, the Southern Indian recipes in this cookbook feature meals that are lighter, healthier, and full of fresh ingredients. So far, we have tried the roasted brussels sprouts and cauliflower dish, and a few of the soup recipes, and all have been delicious. Normally, I'm not a total cookbook guru--I typically make up my own recipes, look up stuff online, or reference the Joy of Cooking, but I love looking through this cookbook to get new ideas. I also appreciate how the author shared her personal family history and cultural context of this type of food--it gave me a deeper understanding of the ingredients and cuisine. I am also a sucker for how things look aesthetically, and I love that way this book is set-up, including the beautiful illustrations and photos that intersperse the recipes. I did have to pay a visit to an Indian market to stock up on some of the spices and other ingredients needed for many of the recipes, but now that I have them on-hand, I mostly just have to get the fresh vegetables when I want to cook something from this book. I would definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone who is interested in healthy, interesting recipes, or just needs some new flavors to get out of a food rut!

This is a unique and thoughtful compilation of South Indian vegetarian home cooking -- the kind I grew up with but never quite learned to cook. While my dear mom has passed away and taking her amazing cooking talent with her, Chitra Agrawal has lovingly captured the recipes that evoke that authentic "home" taste, but often with a fusion twist that make them even more exquisite. And I say this as someone who does not typically like to mess with old school recipes -- I like traditional foods, passed on through generations. But these are definitely an upgrade - fresh, local, colorful, flavorful and fun!

great to buy as gifts for that vegan, gluten free, foodie cousin who is always onto the next big thing!

This cookbook has become my favorite. Everything is so delicious and not complicated. Some of the ingredients are somewhat different but I found everything I needed. It is worth seeking out the ingredients as the end result is superb.

Newest Edition Has Recipes, Convenience--and a Wine Guide

Tons of Lore and Just as Much Convenience

By Bill Marsano. There are more than enough bar guides around to satisfy even the thirstiest soul, so the question becomes which one is the most helpful, the easiest to use. Well, this one has a pretty fair claim to the title.

At about 4.5 inches by 9, it is of convenient, under-bar size (no bartender wants the customer to know he has to look anything up). It has some 2,700 recipes, and it takes them all with a straight face, from the utterly genteel to the impossibly vulgar (in my view, anyone who orders a German Leg-Spreader or a Duck Fart is a lout who should be flung into the street at the earliest opportunity, but that's the bouncer's job). There's an enlarged section on the martini, that greatest of cocktails, that Fred Astaire of drinks; and sections on flavored vodkas, shooters, floaters and wines. The wine section is especially worthy of note. Bartenders used to take the approach of Tim Costello's old Manhattan saloon, which had its wine list painted on the wall. It said: "Red, $2.50. White, $2.50. No substitutions." But times are changing and with any number of places offering wine by the glass, the able bartender has to know more than how to use a corkscrew. In this book, the wine advice comes from that demigod, Robert Parker Jr. himself. Nuff said.

But the best thing about this book is that it has a comb binding--something like a spiral-wire binding, but made of plastic. It means this book, unlike all the others I've see lately, lies FLAT. No more bending the book open, flexing it until the binding cracks, and then weighting it with a beer bottle to keep the thing from flapping closed. Best book on market! Most up to date!

You will probably discard any other books you have previously purchased. The author/bartender obviously knows his stuff.

This book is not by a wannabe or a corporate monkey. It's great that this book does not push brands and is unbiased. The book lays open flat, and the recipes are easy to follow.

I once had a book with twice the recipes but they were 98% bad recipes. I threw that book out.

There is a wine section written by Robert Parker, that has helped me immensely picking out bottles of wine. Other things that make this book stand out are the Martini instructions, Dessert Drink Section, Hot Drink Section, Frozen Drink Section. Glossary of Bartending Lingo.
